How It Happened
The Owls scored just 34 seconds into the game, had 25 penalty corner chances, and held the Corsairs without a shot on the evening as they cruised. KSC led 2-0 after one quarter, 4-0 at halftime, and then added another goal in each of the final two quarters to set the final margin of a game that was never close.
Irini Stefanakos opened the scoring when she rushed up the middle and sent home a perfect centering feed from Bazin for a 1-0 lead right away, the first of 14 shots in the opening 15 minutes for KSC. They also had 10 corners, and one of those is what helped lead to another goal with no time on the clock in the first quarter. Bazin began the insert and passed it to the near side, and the Owls eventually worked it into the middle where
Elizabeth Gonyea found Daileanes for her first goal of the night and fifth of her rookie campaign.
She did not stay at five very long, tacking on another with 6:19 left in the second quarter after cashing in on a feed from
Molly Murray for a 3-0 lead. Stefanakos helped
Hannah Wood put her name on the season goal list about five minutes later as KSC carried a 4-0 lead into halftime, outshooting UMD 19-0. Corsairs goalkeeper Hannah Trombly made 11 saves to prevent the score from being even more lopsided against the home team, and finished with 14 overall on the night.
Bazin retook the team lead in goals with eight by notching a pair of unassisted tallies in the second half, the first in the 39th minute and the other in the 50th.
"It was good to get a conference win and to finally get our offense going," said Keene State head coach
Amy Watson. "It was a good overall team win."
The Owls had been coming off a pair of 1-0 wins in their previous two games, defeating the University of New England by that score on a penalty stroke late in the first half on September 16 at home before downing Westfield State University 1-0 on the road this past Tuesday on a goal from a penalty corner with no time left in the first half. KSC's now four-game winning streak began on September 14 when they won at New England College 3-2 in double overtime but trailed at halftime 1-0. There was no drama tonight in the Owls' conference opening win. KSC was predicted to finish fourth in the Little East preseason poll and the Corsairs last in the seven-team league.
In addition to Trombly's 14 stops, Maggie McCafferty and Sophia Bouffard each made a defensive save for UMass-Dartmouth.
KSC's
Clara Gorman, who earned the win, and
Molly Edmark split time in goal and neither had to make a save.
