Owls Unable to Hold onto Early Lead, Fall to Beacons, 4-1

KEENE, N.H. – The Keene State women's soccer team hosted the University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Ron Butcher Field, as the Owls looked to pick up a crucial Little East Conference at home. After KSC took an early lead on a goal from Elizabeth Tschudin, the Beacons drew even shortly after and tacked on three more goals later in the contest for a 4-1 win over the Owls.

How it Happened
The Owls struck first for the sixth time out of their 14 games to open the season, as Tschudin sent a rocket from far outside the Beacons' box towards the goal, and it deflected off the crossbar and into the back of the net to give KSC the lead in the sixth minute. Sofia Schallmo tied the game up for the Beacons shortly after, as she weaved her way through the Owls' defense and flicked a shot past Owls' goalkeeper, Riley Andriski, in the tenth minute. After Andriski saved the next shot from the Beacons a few minutes later, in the 16th minute, Kathryn Brown was taken down in the Owls' box and awarded a penalty kick for UMB. Schallmo took the kick for the Beacons and converted it easily, which gave UMB a 2-1 lead early on in the contest. The Owls' attack tried to even the game up at two apiece, but the rest of their three shot attempts over the rest of the half, wouldn't find the target. On the other side of the field, Lucinda Cotter attempted to put UMB up by a pair in the final minutes but was denied by Andriski in the 41st minute. In the final moments of the first half, UMB had a corner kick with under two minutes remaining. Caleigh Sullivan sent a curving ball into the box from the corner, and it curved right around the near post and right to Andriski, who was unable to hold onto the ball, as it fell into the goal and gave UMB a 3-1 lead heading into the half.

The Beacons opened the second half on the attack early, as they recorded a pair of shots on goal in the opening five minutes of the second. Andriski was able to save the first shot, but Devan Booth sent a cross to Brown, who was in the middle of the Owls' box and headed the ball past Andriski to put UMB up 4-1 in the 50th minute. The Beacons continued to apply the pressure after their fourth goal, but Giuliana Stolfi would make a defensive save for the Owls and Schallmo's next shot rang off the crossbar to prevent her from scoring a hat trick, as KSC survived allowing a fifth goal. KSC's comeback attempt fell short the rest of the second half, as they were unable to record a shot on goal out of their seven shot attempts, while Andriski held the Beacons from scoring again by making four saves the rest of the contest and UMB picked up the 4-1 win over the Owls.
