NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Olivia Seutter finished with 19 kills on 27 attempts – hitting .667 – as the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth downed the Keene State College women's volleyball team 3-0 (8-25, 11-25, 8-25) in a Little East Conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
Seutter had five more kills than KSC (8-12, 1-3 LEC) did as a team, and the Corsairs – defending Little East tournament champions – won in the series for the second straight time and third in five tries after not beating the Owls prior to that since 2004.
Thanks to their sizzling offense, UMass-Dartmouth was never threatened on the afternoon, hitting .458 while racking up 51 kills to just seven errors. The Corsairs were plus-30 (59-29) in digs and trailed just one time – 1-0 in the second set. KSC scored consecutive points just four times.
UMD began the afternoon by scoring seven of the first 10 points as they took an early upper hand, and the Owls never figured out many answers as the home team went up 14-5 in the opening set on a block of
Gigi Stake by Monica Kristjansdottir and Seutter.
Kaitlyn Cicerone had consecutive kills to answer for KSC, but UMass-Dartmouth scored 11 of the final 12 points, with the lone one they surrendered coming on an attacking error.
The Corsairs again scored seven of the first 10 points in the second set and led 14-6 after a kill by Suetter. KSC got within 15-9 after a block by
Molly Wetherbee and a kill by
Alexis Small, but UMD ended on a 10-2 surge to take a 2-0 lead in the match. KSC had 10 kills and six errors combined over the opening two frames while the Corsairs posted 17 spikes in the first and 18 in the second, respectively. The home team did not hit worse than .438 in any of the three sets, while KSC's best mark was .111 in the second set.
The Owls found themselves trailing 8-2 after calling a timeout early in the third set, and saw UMass-Dartmouth come out of the break by scoring seven more points in a row. It was 18-3 before KSC got a kill by
Jordyn Mik to stop the bleeding for the moment, but the Corsairs closed the set with ease, getting kills from Kristjansdottir and Seutter on three straight rallies to bring up match point, which ended three points later on a KSC service error.
Stephanie Olah and Wetherbee combined for eight kills on only one error, but the rest of the team combined for only six kills for the Owls.
In addition to Seutter, Kate Wade had 12 kills and hit .400 while Allison Pate added eight spikes on a .467 attacking clip as UMass-Dartmouth (15-5, 3-0 LEC) posted their fourth straight win. Their .458 attack percentage as a team was their highest by 29 points (they hit .429 in a 25-13, 25-7, 25-7 win over Framingham State University on September 21). The Corsairs are hitting .215 as a team on the season and have had at least 31 kills in every match. They are undefeated when committing less than 18 attacking errors in a match (10-0).
UMass-Dartmouth is coming off their first ever conference championship a season ago, beating Plymouth State University in five sets on their home court before they fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
KSC won the LEC for the second time in 2022, but is 5-7 in the conference since.
The Owls travel to Curry College (1-16, 0-3 CNE) for a non-conference match on Wednesday, October 16 at 6:00 p.m. The Colonels have won five sets on the season, three of which came in their lone win against Lesley University.
