Four Power Play Goals the Difference For UMD as Men’s Hockey Falls at Home

Owls Have Dropped Three of Four, Two to Corsairs

KEENE, N.H. – Collin Patterson netted a hat trick and Tyler Stewart added a pair of goals as the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth scored four on nine power play opportunities to beat the Keene State College men's ice hockey team 6-4 on Saturday afternoon at Keene Ice.

Highlights
Postgame Interview (Bobby Rodrigue)

The Owls (2-4-1) allowed a game-tying goal while down a man late in the first period as the Corsairs (2-1-0) went into the first intermission with momentum, and the visitors again used their power play as a game-decider in the third, scoring all three of their goals in the period while a man up.  Marcus Chrisafideis sniped a shot past Ethan Labbe from the right faceoff dot just 20 seconds into the period to tie it at three and seemingly give KSC momentum, but a penalty and Patterson's second goal 56 seconds later zapped it quickly and put UMD back up 4-3.  Nolan Wutzke made it a two-goal lead for the visitors again by scoring 4:24 later to make it 5-3.

Chase Carney made it a one-goal game again by banking a no-angle shot in off Labbe following a rebound of a Luke Festa shot with 12:51 to go, but a slashing penalty on Corey Tumenas five minutes later resulted in UMass-Dartmouth pushing their lead back to two just 11 seconds into the power play.  The Owls won the initial faceoff, but Lane Ruffner prevented KSC from clearing and it eventually led to Patterson moving toward the faceoff dot to Ben Skelton's left and dragging around a defender before beating the Owl goalkeeper to the blocker side.  The goal gave Patterson a hat trick and restored the UMD lead to 6-4, which they were able to nurse over the final seven minutes.  After Keene State killed off a too many men penalty, their fourth infraction of the period, Labbe made three stops over the final four minutes and 29 in total.  Skelton made 33 saves for KSC, who dropped to 1-2 at home.

The Owls have allowed four or more goals in four of seven games this season, with opponents' power play tallies accounting for eight of them (40 percent of the total goal allotment in those contests).  KSC has surrendered just one power play goal in the other three games, going 2-0-1.

Chrisafideis now has six goals in seven games this season while Carney has two goals and two assists while being plus-7.  Thor Hansen has a team-best seven assists and Kyle Gonzalez six.

Keene State is off until they travel to Vermont for the Terry Moran Invitational hosted by Vermont State University Castleton beginning on Black Friday (November 29).  The Owls will faceoff against King's College (Pa.) at 4:00 p.m. before playing either the host Spartans or the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts the following day.  UMD, who had entered the day having played just two games, hosts Fitchburg State University (4-0, 1-0 MASCAC) in a conference game on Thursday night (November 21) at 7:30 p.m.
