SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore and leading goal scorer Maddie Greco scored twice, including the game-winner just 1:02 into overtime, as Union College handed the Keene State College field hockey team a 2-1 loss Saturday evening at Frank Bailey Field/Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Greco's first goal came with two minutes left in the first quarter when she engineered an individual effort to split defenders and beat KSC goalkeeper
Clara Gorman for a 1-0 lead.
Irini Stefanakos tied the game with 2:13 to go in the third quarter off a give-and-go feed from
Grace Seabury as the Owls (14-6) found more offense in the second half, but was held to one goal or less for the fourth consecutive game.
Keene State was limited to just two shots in the opening 30 minutes, getting outshot 6-3 before they found more offense after halftime, outshooting the Garnet Chargers (14-5) 8-7. Union goalkeeper Sophie Brady came up big for the hosts to ensure it was just a 1-1 game through three, as she stopped
Meghan Daileanes twice within seconds of each other in the 37th minute and then denied
Kalina Piasecki following a corner with six seconds to go in the third quarter after the Owls had tied it minutes earlier. Kat Bruun followed up Brady's save by clearing away
Megan Goodwin's try in the final seconds of the period.
KSC had more chances early in the fourth, but Brady denied Seabury with 10 minutes to go and the Owls were unsuccessful on a pair of penalty corners over the subsequent minute, with
Grace Bazin firing wide at the 50:41 mark.
The game required extra time after the Owls fended off a pair of penalty corners late in the fourth, and Brady added another save to her ledger by stopped Daileanes again with 4:21 left.
Union got the better of KSC in overtime and ended the game just 1:02 into the extra session, as Gorman stopped Molly Halliday 44 seconds in, but less than 20 seconds later Megan Dorsey sent in a long centering pass, where Greco had time and space to gather and net the game-winner.
"Union was a strong team and we battled them tough," said Keene State head coach
Amy Watson. "It is good for us to play a game like this prior to the playoffs. Hopefully we can keep out intensity up this next week."
The Garnet Chargers were coming off a loss on Wednesday (1-0 at Montclair State University) that ended a seven-game winning streak, a bust that included a 3-2 double overtime win over then-No. 18 University of Rochester. Union has also played four other ranked teams (L 4-0 to Williams College, L 2-1 at Hamilton College, L 3-1 at Ithaca College, and L 5-2 at Wesleyan University) and Vermont State University Castleton, the Little East regular season champion who they beat at home 3-1 to open the season on August 31.
KSC, who started their season a program-best 9-0, will now turn their attention to the Little East tournament, which will begin on Thursday (November 7) with a semifinal home game against either No. 6 seed Western Connecticut State University or No. 3 seed Plymouth State University at 5:00 p.m. The Owls have won a league-record 14 league championships, with the last coming in 2018, at the time their sixth straight.
