AMHERST, Mass. – Keene State College sophomore
Molly Lu McKellar posted a New England Division III-qualifying 3,619 points in the heptathlon while finishing eighth as the Owls sent select athletes to the University of Massachusetts Multi Meet on Wednesday and Thursday at the UMass Track & Field Complex.
McKellar finished eighth of 13 competitors in the event, which featured four Division III competitors (she was second among them). Among the group, McKellar finished first in the shot put (11.09 meters) and second in the javelin (28.18 meters). She also posted marks of 16.79 in the 100 meter hurdles, 1.40 meters in the high jump, 29.19 in the 200 meters, 4.54 meters in the long jump, and 2:49.74 in the 800 meters.
Unattached runner Tesaira Williams finished first with 4,372 points.
On the men's side, sophomore
Eric Carlo was fifth of seven in the decathlon in a field that otherwise featured all Division I or Division II competitors. He finished with 4,764 points, over 1,000 clear of sixth-place Jackson Baker of the University of Vermont. Carlo finished with marks of 11.85 in the 100 meters, 5.65 meters in the long jump, 9.66 meters in the shot put, 1.67 meters in the high jump, 53.79 in the 400 meters, 18.69 in the 100 meter hurdles, 23.33 meters in the discus, 2.95 meters in the pole vault, 37.03 meters in the javelin, and 5:30.07 in the 1,500 meters. Carlo was fourth among the group in the long jump, discus, and javelin.
UMass' Elijah Wolinski won the event with 5,815 points, finishing first in half of the 10 events.
"This was Eric's first collegiate multi meet, and he performed well," said Keene State head coach
Dan Roark. "He was just 64 points away from qualifying for the Division III New England meet, and still has a chance to get there. Molly Lu is a fierce competitor and always puts 100 percent into her events. This sets both of them up for well for late season meets."
