KEENE, N.H.—Freshman Elyse Picard was a combined 4-for-8 on the afternoon, but the Keene State College softball team was swept in both ends of a doubleheader, 6-2 and 8-4, by visiting New England College on Wednesday afternoon.

Records

  • Keene State: 5-27
  • New England College: 11-21

How it Happened

Keene State conceded runs in the opening inning in each game, allowing the Pilgrims a three spot in the opening from which they could never recover.  A wild pitch gave an NEC a 4-0 lead in the second inning, before the Owls countered with a run of their own in the fourth inning.

Consecutive singles by Kalee Keyser and Lilah Demmy put runners in scoring position, before an error allowed Keyser to come around and score.

After the visitors scored twice in the top of the sixth, the Owls added another in the bottom half on Morgan Rodrigues' RBI single to right field.

KSC starter Lily Mandel was chased after one inning, allowing four earned runs and five hits.   Demmy was sterling in relief, striking out eight and walking one and allowing just one run while tossing 111 pitches.

The Owls outhit NEC 11-9 in the second game, but committed three errors that led to six unearned runs in the game.

After spotting the Pilgrims the lead in the first inning, Keene State took it back with a pair of runs in the bottom half, with RBIs coming from Liv Whittier and Kalle Halvorsen.

The lead held until the third inning, scoring twice on a fielder's choice by Abby Grimes and an RBI single by Lauren Hendricks.   NEC added five more in the top of the fifth, led by a bases-clearing double by Sonia Garcia.

KSC would pull back two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, but would not get closer.

Emma Chenette started and went the first three innings.   Megan Strzegowski relieved and scattered three hits, allowing five runs, all of which were unearned.  Demmy returned to the circle for the final 2.1 innings.
