BOSTON, Mass. – The Keene State College men's lacrosse team looked to end their two-game losing skid to Little East Conference opponents as they traveled to take on the University of Massachusetts Boston on Friday night. However, after being tied at 5-5 at halftime, the Beacons pulled away in the second half and the Owls' comeback fell short as they suffered a 11-9 defeat to UMB.
Records
- Keene State: 6-8 (5-3 LEC)
- UMass-Boston: 13-4 (7-1 LEC)
How it Happened
After each goalkeeper made a save in net on the opposing team's opening offensive possession,
Tim Kelleher caused a turnover on defense for the Owls, which resulted in KSC getting on the board first, on a goal from
Giacomo Tedone, 2:29 into the contest. After the Owls struck first, the Beacons scored four consecutive goals over the next 8:08 of play, as Greg Wolff, Nolen Beauregard, Zach Mann, and Mic Flynn each scored a goal for UMB. The Owls were able to sneak one more goal in at the end of the first quarter, with 42 seconds left, as
Colby Quiet scored his first of the day to bring the Owls to within a pair heading into the second quarter.
Quiet tallied his second point of the game on the first goal of the second quarter, as he assisted Tedone for his second goal of the game, to bring KSC within a goal on a man-up goal 2:26 into the second. The Beacons' goalkeeper, James Boldy, tried his best to keep the Owls from tying the game up at four, by making five saves in a row, but Quiet was finally able to fire his second goal of the day past him, to tie the game up with 3:24 left in the first half. Less than a minute later, after Quiet won the ensuing faceoff,
Dylan Seymour assisted
Jack Ansart to give the Owls the lead with 2:33 remaining in the first half. Just as it seemed like the Owls would take their lead into halftime, the Beacons evened it up at five apiece as Sean Daly scored a goal with one second remaining for UMB, as the teams headed into halftime, 5-5.
Both teams traded goals to start up the second half of play, as Wolff scored his second of the game, and shortly after, Tedone assisted Quiet for a man-up goal, to tie the game up at 6-6. Unfortunately for the Owls, they would not score the rest of the third quarter, as Boldy made three more saves in net, while the Beacons scored two more goals on the attack, with Daly and Wolff each tallying another goal each, which gave UMB the 8-6 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Boldy made another pair of saves for the Beacons to open the final quarter, but the Owls were finally able to break his streak of seven consecutive saves made, as
Jaheim Lancaster assisted Tedone to pull KSC within a goal with 12:48 remaining to play. Boldy was able to bounce back and hold the Owls scoreless for nearly the next 10 minutes by making four saves in net, until the Owls were able to score again, and over that time span, the Beacons scored three consecutive goals to jump out to a four-goal lead. Mann and Wolff each tallied a man-up goal for the Beacons, while Daly tallied his fourth goal of the game to give UMB a 11-7 lead with 5:42 remaining. High School teammates,
Andrew Miller and
Rex Maccarini accounted for the Owls' eighth goal of the game, as Miller assisted Maccarini for the goal as the Owls tried to mount a comeback with 3:12 remaining. Quiet won the ensuing faceoff for the Owls, which resulted in Seymour scoring just 34 seconds later, as KSC pulled to within a pair. After the Beacons called a timeout to recollect themselves, they completely halted the Owls' momentum, as they won the ensuing faceoff and were able to run the clock out the rest of the way and pick up the 11-9 win over KSC.
