WORCESTER, Mass. –
Meghan Daileanes and
Grace Bazin each scored twice and the Keene State College field hockey team's offense kept humming early in the season as the Owls hammered Worcester State University 4-0 at Coughlin Field in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
Much like Wednesday at Colby-Sawyer College, when they led by two goals just 7:42 in, KSC (3-0) was again ahead by a pair nearly immediately – this time even faster – as they led 2-0 in only 6:02. It was again Daileanes and Bazin carrying the scoring load, with the duo combining for 10 goals over the first three games of the season. Daileanes added an assist, as did
Irini Stefanakos and
Alessandra Vidal.
Keene State used their speed to create their two early goals that came 1:51 apart. In the fifth minute, relentless pressure by Stefanakos forced a Worcester State (0-3) turnover and allowed the Owl senior to dish off to Daileanes with a threaded pass between a pair of defenders to cash in after she was more or less alone on WSU keeper Madison Ferrara. The Owls made it 2-0 in similar fashion moments later, as pressure created a transition chance and
Grace Seabury found Daileanes streaking up the middle of the field. From there, the Owl sophomore passed off to her left and a streaking Bazin up the left side, who carried in and beat Ferrara for a 2-0 lead.
The first half was complete domination by KSC, as they piled up a 20-0 shots advantage and had 17 penalty corner chances. Ferrara made eight stops to prevent a huge goal number from being produced by the Owls, though Daileanes potted a rebound of her own shot following a nice save to make it 3-0 with less than three minutes to go in the half.
KSC's offense picked up right where it left off early in the second half, as Vidal corralled the ball about 15 yards outside the circle and flicked a pass past three defenders and found the stick of Bazin, who gathered the ball with a few touches and tallied her second marker of the contest 4:57 after the break. Leading 4-0 and with massive statistical advantages on the scoresheet, the Owls cruised from there to a 3-0 record for the first time since 2018 when they finished 18-7 and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.
"We were luckily able to grab a lead early on. We created a lot of opportunities throughout the entire game, but Worcester's defensive team did a nice job shutting us down on penalty corners," said KSC head coach
Amy Watson.
The Owls finished with a 31-4 advantage in shots and 26-5 in corners.
Clara Gorman got the win in the KSC cage after making one save in 45 minutes before
Katelyn Nicotera made a pair of stops in the fourth. Ferrera finished with 13 stops for Worcester, who has lost three of their last four in the series.
Keene State, who has outscored opponents 13-1 on the season, will host New England College (3-0) on Thursday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m. Worcester State travels to face Springfield College (1-2) on the same night at 6:00 p.m.
