MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – In the second game of a home-and-home between the two first-year programs, the Keene State College women's ice hockey team used a three-goal third period to secure their 4-1 win over the Framingham State Rams on Saturday night.
Records
- Keene State: 9-6
- Framingham State: 0-10 (0-4 MASCAC)
How it Happened
Both teams started off the contest with a few shots on goal both ways, but Lila Chamoun, the Rams' goaltender, saved the three shots she faced, while KSC's goaltender
Makenna Montgomery saved all four shots on goal in the opening 5:37 that she saw. It took the Owls a little while to find their grove that they had the previous night when they defeated the Rams 8-2. After eight shots on goal over the next five minutes were saved by Chamoun, shortly following
Camden Ladzinski won a faceoff, she netted the opening goal 11:25 into the first.
Madison Mosca and
Rory Owens picked up assists on the goal by Ladzinski, as Owens recorded her first career collegiate point. The rest of the period, there were only two shots on goal, one from each
Haylee Owen and
Emma McNeil as were both turned away and the Owls held onto their 1-0 lead heading into the second period.
FSU opened the second period looking to even the game up at one apiece as they recorded eight shots on goal over the opening 4:33 of play, but Montgomery held her ground and saved them all to keep the contest scoreless early in the period. Soon after, the Owls found themselves trying to add an extra goal, but Chamoun saved all five shots over the next three minutes, before FSU was called for the first penalty of the game, 8:16 into the period. The Owls were unable to capitalize on the extra-skater opportunity as Chamoun once again saved all three shots on target over the two-minute advantage. The Owls continued to apply the pressure the rest of the period, as Chamoun was forced to make five more saves, while Montgomery made one over the same time span. With 1:56 remaining in the period, after winning a faceoff, Petra Cernicek evened the game up at one apiece for the Rams as she found the back of the net for the third time this season. Chamoun kept the game tied at one going into the third with three saves the rest of the period for the Owls.
Both teams took turns with shots on goal over the first seven minutes of the final period, with KSC outshooting FSU, 4-3, but their netminders held their ground. Then, 7:27 into the period,
Ava Iantosca broke the tie with a goal from
Brianna Finke, to put the Owls back ahead by one. Just over a minute later, after
Abby Pomajba won the faceoff, the Owls tacked on another goal, with Ladzinski and Mosca both picking up another point, as this time, Ladzinski assisted Mosca on her goal to put KSC up by a pair with 11:26 left to play. The Owls did not take their foot off the gas over the next five minutes, as they continued to pepper Chamoun in goal, but she saved all seven shots, just as Montgomery saved all three shots she faced in goal, as well. KSC had a power play opportunity twice over the next four minutes, but they were unable to tack on another insurance goal, as Chamoun saved both shots on the penalty kill for the Rams. As the time started to run out in the contest, FSU was called for another penalty with a minute left, and when Chamoun got stuck going to the bench for the extra skater for the Rams to hopefully catch up to KSC,
Ellie Patrick put the nail in the coffin with 19 seconds left, giving KSC the 4-1 win over the Rams on the day.
