WORCESTER, Mass. – Emma McGuane proved to be the Owls' kryptonite on Saturday night, as the Keene State College women's ice hockey team was unable to stop her from scoring four goals to go with an assist for Anna Maria College as the Amcats took down the Owls, 5-3.
Records
- Keene State: 13-8-0
- Anna Maria: 6-11-1
How it Happened
The Owls were on the attack early in the first, as they forced the Amcats goaltender, Megan Tegethoff, to make six saves in the opening 5:15 to keep the game scoreless. KSC had their first power play opportunity 5:18 into play, but they did not do anything with it, as the two minutes went by without a shot on goal for the Owls. The Owls' netminder,
Ai Chung, saved the first two shots in a row from the Amcats, but the third fell right to McGuane, who put AMC on the board 9:52 into the first. AMC had another opportunity to score again with a power play, 13:42 into the period, but just as KSC's power play, AMC was unable to record even a shot on goal over the two minutes. Chung made one last save in the final minute to hold the Amcats to a one-goal lead heading into the second.
KSC evened the game up at one apiece just 1:35 into the second, as
Rory Owens blocked a shot on defense, leading to her picking up an assist on
Brianna Finke's goal for KSC. The Owls had an opportunity to take the lead with a power play 4:05 into the period, but they once again couldn't capitalize, as not only did they not record a shot on goal, but the Amcats did, which Chung saved. 8:14 into the second, McGuane netted her second of the day, from another loose rebound in front of the net, for a power play goal to put the Amcats back up. Shortly after, McGuane netted her third goal of the game 4:33 later, when the Owls were unable to cleanly clear the puck out of the zone, to put AMC up by 2. The rest of the period, KSC tried to mount a comeback to gain momentum heading into the third, but they were unable to, as Tegethoff saved all three shots that she faced to close out the period.
KSC came out of the gates hot at the start of the third, just as they did in the second, as
Ava Iantosca's shot from the blue line was misplayed by Tegethoff and found the back of the net for her fourth straight game with a goal. Chung made four saves over the next five minutes, but she was unable to make a fifth, as McGuane scored her fourth of the game to put AMC back up by a pair. Six minutes later, following another pair of saves, McGuane picked up an assist, finding Carly Drew, to put AMC up 5-3 with 7:24 remaining in regulation. The rest of the way, KSC tried to mount a comeback, but they were only able to get one shot on goal, coming from
Molly Price, with 1:12 remaining, as the Amcats held off the Owls' comeback for a 5-3 win over KSC.
