KEENE, N.H. –
Alexis Small served up a whopping eight of the Keene State College women's volleyball team's 16 aces as the Owls coasted to a 3-0 sweep of non-conference opponent Curry College in a brisk match on Wednesday night at Spaulding Gymnasium.
KSC (8-11) took the sets 25-13, 25-6, and 25-20 – holding the Colonels (5-12) to -.234 hitting in the match, which lasted barely over an hour. Through two sets, Curry had just three kills to 20 attacking errors.
How the match played out allowed head coach Jake Girard to get plenty of players ample playing time and experiment with different lineups.
Sarah Bartels finished with a team-high six kills on 10 total attempts while
Marina Miller added six kills of her own to just one error.
Colleen Fraser added five. In addition to her aces, Small added 17 assists and four digs.
Grace Christian had four aces.
Curry led 5-3 very early in the opening set, but KSC scored eight in a row to go up six and force a timeout for the visitors. The Owls' momentum was never slowed for the remainder of that set or the next, as they outscored the Colonels 47-14 to take a 2-0 match lead. Fraser had two kills and Small a pair of aces in a 7-0 opening run in the second set, and eventually a pair of aces and another swing by Fraser in a five-point span made it 18-2. The Owls led by as many as 19.
Keene State led 6-3 and 11-6 early in the third, but Curry hung around this time – getting back within 13-10 on an ace by Carley May. The Owls used a 5-0 burst later to assume a 19-11 advantage and made it 22-14 on a pair of kills by Miller followed by Small's eighth and final ace, though KSC had to continue to work for it after Curry scored five straight to get within three again. The Owls were never significantly threatened, however, as Bartels ended the Colonels' run and KSC ended the match with another Bartels point and a block by
Katie Taylor.
The Owls hit .268 in the match and began to send some of the frustrations at Spaulding Gymnasium, where they entered 0-4 – losing twice in five sets and twice in four.
Keene State is 4-0 all-time against Curry, winning all 12 sets.
KSC will host the University of Southern Maine and Regis College (Mass.) for a Senior Day tri-match on Saturday, October 18 beginning at 12:00 p.m.
