WORCESTER, Mass. – The Keene State College top line of
Chase Carney,
Peter Unger, and
Marcus Chrisafideis combined for four goals and four assists in a dominant night as the Owls pulled away to a 6-3 victory over Worcester State University in non-conference action at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center on Thursday night.
It was a much-needed win for KSC (3-2-0), who rebounded from a pair of weekend home conference losses with one of their best offensive efforts so far on the young season as six different Owls recorded points, paced by their top line – all of whom finished with at least a plus-four rating. Unger finished plus-five.
The difference in the game ultimately was the second period, as the Owls expanded a one-goal lead to 5-2 quickly, scoring twice in 1:55 early in the period. First,
Kyle Gonzalez pounded on the rebound of a
Thor Hansen shot at the 6:21 mark before a
Sean McBride dump in lofted in the air and bounced around in front of the net before Carney whacked it home for his second of the night at 8:16 to suddenly put KSC up three.
Unger tipped home
Shane Mazur's blast from just inside the blue line 1:11 into the third as the Owls turned their third win of the season into a rout, holding Worcester State (2-1-2) to just 12 shots over the final two periods and handing the home team their first regulation loss of the season.
KSC took command after what was a wild five-goal first period, all coming in the second half of the period. Worcester took their only lead of the night when Matthew Nuzzolilo beat
Ethan Swanson 10:53 in, but Gonzalez responded with a power play goal less than two minutes later. The Owls took a 2-1 lead 16:05 in when
Marcus Chrisafideis jumped on a pass from Unger following a battle along the boards behind the goal. The Lancers needed just 18 seconds to tie it again, but a wraparound goal from the 6-4 Carney with 1:41 left in the period proved to turn the tide for good as the Owls carried a 3-2 lead into the room at the first intermission.
The Owls improved to 2-0 on the road and 2-0 against Worcester State after a 6-4 win over the Lancers at Keene Ice last year. Worcester began their season with a 3-2 overtime win over Assumption College and then won the WooCup with a 4-1 victory over Anna Maria College before tying (and falling in a shootout) in each of their next two games.
After a team-best plus-19 rating last year, Carney is plus-six in five games this year along with Chrisafideis. Unger is plus-eight.
"It was important for the guys to put in a complete game effort," said KSC head coach Bobby Rodrigue. "Knocking off a team that was previously undefeated is hopefully something the boys can use as a springboard. Good to see points coming from different guys in the lineup."
Swanson made 21 saves in the win for the Owls in his first start of the season. Donovan Alfama made five saves in the first period and was pulled after allowing three goals. Salvatore Carabelli made 15 stops over the final two periods.
KSC returns home for a Little East Conference game against Western Connecticut State University (0-5-0, 0-2-0 LEC) on Saturday (November 15) at 3:30 p.m. at Keene Ice. The Wolves have allowed 30 goals over the first five games of their inaugural campaign, losing their last four games all by at least four goals after a 5-4 overtime loss in their first-ever game. Worcester State visits the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (1-2-1) on the same day (5:00 p.m.).
