Owls Stunned at Home in OT by Huskies, 3-2

KEENE, N.H. – In a back-and-forth contest after being behind late in the second, the Keene State College women's soccer team was able to force overtime against the University of Southern Maine, but 4:25 into the overtime period, the Huskies shocked the Owls with a goal to end their Little East Conference season.

  • Southern Maine: 10-10-2 (4-2-2 LEC)

How it Happened

The Huskies got on the board early in the contest as following a lot of contact in the Owls' defensive half of the field Lexi Morin forced her way to the ball and sent a pass to Riley Reitchel for a goal 4:22 into the contest. USM tried to apply the pressure with another goal, but following a save by the Owls' goalkeeper, Riley Andriski, the Owls were able to tie the game up in the 12th minute. Allison Kenyon had a great opportunity in the Huskies' box, but Devan Sherry took her out for a KSC penalty kick which Emily O'Connell converted for the Owls for her third goal of the year. The Huskies tried to respond right back but Andriski made another save in goal, while in the 24th minute the Owls had one of their best scoring chances all day. Giuliana Stolfi took a free kick for the Owls that went up and over the Huskies keeper, Madi Cook, but rang off the crossbar and back into play. Elizabeth Tschudin was in the perfect spot for the rebound for the Owls, but her header just missed the goal as the game stayed tied for the moment. The Owls had another few offensive chances following the 29th minute, but a pair of corner kicks did not amount to anything as all three shots KSC took after went wide of the target. USM looked to have taken the lead in the 40th minute heading into the half but following a pair of back-to-back pointblank saves in net from Andriski, the third shot, that found the back of the net for the Huskies, was ruled offsides and disallowed with five minutes remaining in the opening half. 1:30 before the half was up the Owls had one more opportunity but Cook made a save to send the game into the half 1-1.

Neither team found the frame over the first 20 minutes of the second half as the six shots from USM and the three shots from the Owls all missed the target each time. The best opportunity over the 20-minute span came for the Huskies on a free kick just on the edge of the Owls' box but the shot attempt from Meghan Przybilla was blocked and kicked out of the Owls' zone. Andriski saved the first pair of shots on target from the Huskies in the second half but USM found the back of the net at the 69:35 mark as Lexi Moran sent a shot just past a diving Andriski for the 2-1 lead. Both keepers made a save in next over the next 11 minutes, but with 7:57 remaining in the contest Stolfi made up for her shot hitting the crossbar earlier in the contest as she sent a far free kick up into the top corner of the goal over Cook's hand to tie the game up at two apiece erupting the crowd of KSC fans. As the rest of regulation came to a close, Andriski had to make one more save in goal for the Owls in the final 30 seconds as the teams headed into the overtime period tied at 2-2.

In the first of the two golden goal 10-minute overtime periods, USM was on the attack early on. They had a pair of shots in the opening three minutes, but one went wide and the other was blocked by the Owls' defense. KSC was unfortunately unable to possess the ball much in the overtime period which led to an opportunity for the Huskies, which they capitalized on as Reitchel sent a pass into the Owls' box leading to Makayla Magid scoring the game winner for USM, 4:25 into the overtime period to end the contest.
