Comeback Comes Up Short, Owls Handed First Loss of 2025, 3-2

MANSFIELD, Conn. – After the best open to their season since 2017, the Keene State College men's soccer team were handed their first loss of the 2025 season as their comeback came up short against Eastern Connecticut State University, 3-2, on the road.

Records
  • Keene State: 4-1 (0-1 LEC)
  • Eastern Connecticut State: 3-2 (1-0 LEC)

How it Happened

KSC's attack was going early but of their four shots over the opening 16 minutes, three missed the target and the other was blocked by the Warriors. ECSU opened the first 30 minutes of the contest with seven shots as they were more efficient than the Owls with their opportunities with five being on frame. After the first four of the five were saved by KSC's goalie Eldin Husanovic, ECSU took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Reid Dowling in the 30th minute. The rest of the opening half the Owls had just another pair of shots that did not amount to anything as they went into the half trailing for the first time on the season.

After ECSU opened the second half with a goal 2:14 into the second half, it only took 3:36 before the Owls answered right back as Jack Corby sent a corner kick into the Warriors box that Cristian Correa put into the back of the net to decrease the lead back to one for ECSU. KSC was starting to gain momentum both sides of the ball over the next 20 minutes as they blocked the only two shots from ECSU on defense and they recorded nine shots on the attack. Unfortunately for KSC, only one of the nine shots reached the Warriors' goalkeeper, Jack Harmon, which he saved, as the Owls continued to have shots not on target. With 16:12 the Warriors struck again for their third goal of the game as Eliot Melgar scored his second goal of the season for ECSU. Just as they did at the beginning of the second half, the Owls answered right back to the Warriors' goal as Martin Lubunga assisted Luke Hartshorn on his first career collegiate goal to pull KSC once again within a goal with 11:36 remaining. The Owls' defense locked down ECSU the remainder of the game by denying their two shot attempts. ECSU was able to the same for the Owls as Harmon saved the one shot the Owls had on goal the rest of the way to hand the Owls' their first loss of 2025.

Inside the Box
  • KSC falls to 20-10-6 in the all-time series between the two teams, as ECSU snapped the Owls' two-game winning streak.
  • The Owls outshot the Warriors 21-14 but were inefficient as only four of their shots were on target (19%) compared to eight on target from ECSU (57%). ECSU also had the advantage on corner kicks over the Owls, 9-6.
  • Correa tallied his third goal of the season as he is 60% to his 2024 total on the season, while Hartshorn tallied his first as an Owl.
  • Coming into the game with four saves over the first four games of the season while going 4-0 and allowing one goal, Husanovic made five saves in the contest.
