SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior
Gigi Stake set a new career-high for the second straight match with 29 digs while
Katie Taylor posted a combined 15 kills on just 25 attempts and
Marina Miller combined for 22 kills on .270 hitting and 34 digs as the Keene State College women's volleyball team took both ends of a tri-match on Saturday, downing Worcester Polytechnic Institute 3-2 and host Western New England 3-0 in non-conference action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
The Owls (4-5) snapped a five-match losing streak in the process, winning in five for the first time against a WPI (6-4) team that had already beaten predicted upper-echelon Little East opponents (who have met in the last two conference championship games) University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and Plymouth State University. KSC also avenged last year's loss to the Golden Bears (3-7), winning in straight sets for the first time this season while also winning for the fourth time in the last five head-to-head meetings (three by sweep).
KSC got off to a strong start in the opening two sets of the day against WPI, trailing only twice (1-0 and 3-2) early in the second while posting comfortable 25-19 and 25-18 set victories. It seemed the Owls were well on their way in the third as well, opening advantages of 9-4 and 18-15, but the Engineers closed on a 10-3 burst to force a fourth. Their surge continued then, as they opened up a 15-6 lead 24 points in and rolled to a 25-12 win to force a decisive set. KSC put a quick end to WPI's momentum by scoring eight of the first 10 points in the fifth, including two kills from Miller and three straight from Stake. WPI trimmed their deficit to as little as 10-7, but two straight attacking errors by the Engineers put the Owls back up five and a kill by Taylor brought up match point at 14-9. A setter dump over by
Ava Harkins fell to the ground to put an end to KSC's five-match skid. The Owls limited WPI to just .079 hitting despite connecting at only a .095 clip themselves. KSC did hit .333 in a commanding second set win (13 kills, three errors), and .233 in the fifth (10 kills, three errors) while limiting the Engineers to only three kills and five errors.
