KEENE, N.H. – Weather cut the game short on Saturday afternoon for the Keene State College women's soccer team, but the game was almost decided by the 81st minute as the Owls fell to Wheaton College (Mass.) 4-0 at home.
Records
- Keene State: 1-3
- Wheaton: 2-1
How it Happened
The Lyons were on the attack early as they recorded a shot on average of every other minute over the opening 14 minutes of action. Making her second consecutive save on her sophomore season,
Hannah Verville saved all four of the seven shots that were on target over the opening 14 minutes to keep the scoreless early on, to go with a scoring opportunity where she charged out of the net to prevent a scoring opportunity from Wheaton. After Patricia Bandrup saved the first shot on target by the Owls, WC had another offensive push just after the 31st minute mark as they had a pair of corner kick opportunities. Although it looked promising, Verville locked the Lyons down with another save to go with another pressure coming out of the net to prevent another shot from the Lyons. As the first half was in the final minutes, Wheaton finally found the back of the net shortly after another save from Verville, Gina Trovato scored with 1:49 left to give WC a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
The Lyons opened the second half up with a penalty kick goal as
Giuliana Stolfi picked up her second penalty in the box on the year, this time resulting in Karina Contreras putting Wheaton up 2-0 in the 49th minute. KSC tried what they could to start to mount a comeback but after Bandrup made a save on
Allison Kenyon's shot a minute later, Alexandra Therrien scored the third goal of the day for Wheaton in the 56th minute. Neither team recorded another shot on goal over the next 16 minutes until Ali Roche scored for WC to jump ahead 4-0 to go with her assist from earlier in the contest. The rest of the 10 minutes before the weather brought the game to an early end, the Owls were unable to get the offense going as they were unable to record another shot on goal, as they would eventually fall 4-0 to the Owls.
