Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Déjà Vu: Owls Open 2025 Season With Third Consecutive 2-0 Victory

NEW LONDON, N.H. – No this is not the same recap as the previous two contests. For the third time to open the 2025 season, the Keene State College men's soccer team won 2-0, this time coming on the road at Colby-Sawyer College on Sunday afternoon.

Records
  • Keene State: 3-0
  • Colby-Sawyer: 0-3-1

How it Happened

The Owls opened the contest with their quickest goal of the season as shortly after the Chargers' goalkeeper Evan Whalen saved the first shot on goal, Martin Lubunga buried a goal for KSC, 2:26 into the contest. After the Chargers were unable to capitalize on a pair of corner kicks shortly after, the Owls responded with a pair of shots on goal, but Whalen turned them both away. Neither team found the back of the net the rest of the opening half as two more of the Owls' shots on goal were saved, while the only shot on target from CSC missed the target and the Owls went into the half up a goal.

KSC opened the scoring in the second half with a goal 21 minutes into it as Dorian Wilczynski scored his second goal in as many games as Lubunga picked up another point from an assist, alongside Luke Hartshorn helping put the Owls up 2-0 with 23:05 remaining.

"When we did move the ball and link passes, we created some good chances. Lubunga had a great assist to Wilczynski to close out a strong attacking sequence" said Owls' head coach Matt Schmidt on the Owls' opening goal in the second half.

KSC continued to apply the pressure over the next 12 minutes of the half as the Owls had a pair of corners and shots, but the shots did not reach the target and the corners did not amount to opportunities. In the final 10 minutes of the contest, there were four yellow cards and one red card handed out combined between the two teams, but at the end of the day it did not affect the final score as KSC held on for the 2-0 win.

"They definitely fought hard, and conditions were a little wet. We needed to be a bit more composed and focus on the control of the game instead of letting the pressure pull us off that game plan" Schmidt said how there were 13 cards total between the two teams on the day. "Overall we are glad to get the win. Back to our process and more discipline this week in terms to sticking to who we need to be in order to prepare for RPI on Wednesday."
