BOSTON, Mass. – Following a 4-0 game the previous night the Keene State College women's ice hockey team held strong on Saturday afternoon, forcing overtime against the University of Massachusetts-Boston, but the Beacons capitalized in the 3-on-3 period as they defeated KSC, 2-1.
Records
- Keene State: 8-12-0 (5-9-0 LEC)
- UMass-Boston: 11-6-2 (7-4-1 LEC)
How it Happened
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes of action with the Owls' goalie,
Ai Chung, needing to make 17 saves to hold the Beacons off the board across the first period. Chung made a pair of saves in the opening two minutes of the first, but the Owls were on the attack shortly after, as the Beacons' goalie, Veronika Hadamovsky made five saves over the next five minutes to keep the Owls off the board for the moment. After Hadamovsky's five saves in as many minutes, it was all UMB on the attack the rest of the opening period, as the Beacons recorded 10 shots on goal over the ensuing eight minutes where Chung saves them all, to go with a pair of blocked shots by her teammates on defense. With 3:32 remaining in the opening period, both teams were called for roughing penalties, sending the game to 4-on-4, but neither team capitalized on the opportunity with less skaters on the ice. Hadamovsky made her sixth save of the period, while Chung added three saves over the two-minute span, followed by Chung making another pair of saves later in the period as the game went into the first intermission tied at 0-0.
UMB had an early power play opportunity in the second period, just 20 seconds in, and they capitalized on the opportunity with 28 seconds to go in the advantage, following five saves from Chung, as Emily Hansen tipped home a redirect into the net to put UMB ahead 1-0. 5:57 into the period, KSC had their first power play opportunity of the day, but the Owls were only able to get two shots on target as Hadamovsky saved a pair of shots from
Emily Edmunds and the Beacons killed the penalty off to hold onto the lead for the moment. The remainder of the second period did not see too much action on goal as Hadamovsky only needed to make three more saves, while Chung made five saves herself over the final 12 minutes as UMB took their 1-0 lead into the final period of regulation.
Both goalies made a pair of saves over the first five minutes of the third, but 5:43 into the period, UMB had another power play opportunity as they looked to add the insurance goal. Chung made four saves as the Owls killed off the penalty, and KSC was the team that found the back of the net 18 seconds after the penalty expired.
Emerson Spinale and
Kenzley Goode both picked up assists on
Ava Iantosca's goal that drew even for KSC with 11:59 remaining in the third. Over the next 7:40, Chung made six more saves, while Hadamovsky only needed to make a pair as the Owls were called for a penalty with 4:19 remaining, giving the Beacons a great opportunity to steal a late goal. UMB recorded three shots while up a skater for the two minutes, but Chung saves the only one on frame, along with another two saves the remainder of the third period as the contest headed to overtime for the Owls' second OT game in their past three games.
Iantosca won the opening faceoff of the sudden death overtime period for the Owls, but after controlling most of the first two minutes of the OT period, the Owls were unable to manage a shot on goal. On the other side of the ice shortly after, after Chung made the initial save on a shot by Grace Lynch, Hansen scored the game winner to give the Beacons the 2-1 victory.
