Early Lead Slips Away in Second Half for Men's Soccer, 3-1

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Federico Spagnuolo netted his first career collegiate goal for the Keene State College men's soccer to take the lead nine minutes into the contest, but after three second half goals, Williams College answered back and defeated the Owls in the end, 3-1.

Records
  • Keene State: 1-6-3 (0-2-2 LEC)
  • Williams: 8-1-1 (5-1-1 NESCAC)

How it Happened

Both goalkeepers started off the game with a save in net but after KSC's first corner kick of the contest, it resulted in Federico Spagnuolo netting her first career collegiate goal with Adrian Bueno picking up an assist to put KSC ahead in the ninth minute. Williams tried to respond right back with four corner kicks and seven shots over the next 10 minutes, but only one shot reached the target with Mateu Farre saving the shot from the Ephs. The Owls had a pair of shots on the other side of the field a few minutes later, but the shot from each Dorian Wilczynski and Tommaso Brivio missed the frame and were the last two shots for KSC in the opening half, with 22 minutes still left to play in the first. The rest of the way in the opening half the Ephs had four more corner kicks to go with 10 more shots, with Farre making a save on all five that were on goal to maintain the Owls' one goal lead heading into the half.

It took almost 15 minutes for the Ephs to record a shot on goal in the second half, but they capitalized on it as Kai Desmangles scored the Ephs' first goal of the game to knot the contest up at one apiece in the 60th minute. Williams continued to apply the pressure on the attack as they added on their second goal of the contest seven minutes later, following four shots missed the target, with Lorcan Mitchell giving the Ephs the lead with 23:01 remaining in the contest. Over the next 2:15 both goalies made a save apiece before the Ephs continued to pepper Farre in net. Farre held strong by making a save on the next four shots that he faced, but with 1:29 remaining, the Ephs put the final nail in the coffin following a corner kick as Jake Farmer scored the third goal, defeating KSC 3-1.
