ROCHESTER, N.Y. 9/2/01 - Katie Parkinson's (South Kingstown,
R.I.)) goal 3:37 into the first overtime period gave Keene State
College a1-0 victory over host University of Rochester at the
Flower City Classic on Sunday.
It was the second overtime win of the weekend for Keene State
(2-0), which defeated Oneonta State 1-0 (2-OT) on Saturday. Eastern
CT edged Oneonta earlier in the day to claim the Classic title,
which came down to goal difference.
For the second straight day, the game-winning goal came off a
corner kick play. Freshman Melissa Bergeron (Claremont, NH) raced
down the field to force the kick. Jessica Williams (Nashua, N.H.)
hit the crossing ball and Parkinson, crashing the net, was able to
get a foot on the ball and tip in by Rochester goalie Sarah
Malecki. 'I went right toward the goal and it deflected off my foot
into the net,' said Parkinson about her first goal of the season.
It was an awesome feeling.' 'She made a great run and used her size
to get the goal,' added KSC Coach Denise Lyons.
Freshman Michelle Mason (Fairport, N.Y.), made nine saves to
notch her second consecutive shutout. She was named Defensive MVP
of the Tournament.
'To win two come-from-behind games on a turf field is a great
way to start the season,' said Lyons. With us and Eastern CT each
winning two games, it shows the strength of our conference.'
Keene State will continue on the road facing Clark University on
Thursday in Worcester at 7 p.m.
