'GORHAM, ME – Junior Chris Timson
(Beverly, MA.) scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second
half as the unbeaten Keene State College Owls pulled away from the
University of Southern ME Huskies to post a 90-67 victory in Little
East
Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Warren G. Hill
Gymnasium.
The win was the seventh straight for the unbeaten Owls who
Improved 2-0 in the Little East. Southern ME reMEd winless
through seven games and is 0-2 in the LEC.
Timson tossed in seven points during the Owls' 19-7 run during
the first five minutes of the second half as the visitors'
seven-point halftime lead (40-33) quickly grew to 19 (59-40).
The 6-foot-3 Timson hit on 6 of 8 shots after the intermission,
including two three-point baskets.
Keene State continued building the lead to 24 (74-50) before the
Huskies' sophomore guard Mike Francoeur (Somersworth, N.H.) scored
four straight points on one-of-two free throws and a
three-pointer. After a timeout, Timson scored for Keene State
and the momentum swung back to the Owls. Keene State's
biggest lead was 27 points (87-60) with four minutes to play.
'We got some transition points and loosened up their zone,' said
KSC Coach Rob Colbert about the Owls' ability to pull away in the
second half. 'Dybizbanski came in and hit some big
three-pointers for us.'
"When your two point guards (Bennett Pawlusiak and Alphonse
Michalski) have just one turnover, its a good day, he added.
The teams battled through an even first half a USM sophomore
guard Jason Levecque (Westbrook, ME) kept the Huskies within
striking distance. Levecque's three-point shot with 1:37 left
in the half pulled USM within one (34-33), but the Owls responded
by scoring the final six points of the half.
Senior Derek Swenson (Attleboro, MA.), with 14 points, and
junior Bennett Pawlusiak (Bedford, N.H.), with 11 points, were the
only other Owls to reach double figures. Thirteen of Keene
State's 15 players who saw action scored.
Levecque led all scorers with 22 points for the Huskies.
Francoeur added 14 points for the Huskies.
Keene State finished the game shooting 47 percent (34 for 73)
from the floor, including 44 percent (11 for 25) from beyond the
arc. The Owls swarming defense forced 26 turnovers in the game.
'Considering it was exam week, the fact that we were able to go
on the road and win a conference game is exciting,' said Colbert.
Keene State returns to action December 29-30 when it plays in
the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Arizona.
