KSC Upsets Gordon 12-10 In ECAC Lacrosse Tourn.

WENHAM, MA. 5/8/02 - Joe Branciforte's (Cromwell, CT) goal with 5:37 to play was the game-winner in Keene State College's 12-10 upset victory over Gordon College in an ECAC Division III Tournament quarterfinal game played in Wenham, MA. on Wednesday.

Playing in its first-ever post-season tournament, sixth seeded Keene State (12-2) advances to the semifinal where they will face second seed Babson College on Friday. Babson defeated UMA-Dartmouth 21-11 in its quarterfinal game. Third seed Gordon College completes its season with a 10-5 mark.

The Owls who trailed by as many as four goals (7-3) midway in the second quarter gradually chipped away at the Fighting Scots lead and eventually tied the game 9-9 on a goal by Branciforte with three minutes to play in the third quarter.

After Gordon took a 10-9 lead, Eric Momnie (So. Windsor, CT) stole a clearing pass and deposited the ball into the net to knot the game again at 10-all.

Coming out of the penalty box, Branciforte collected a cross-field pass and put the ball in the net for the go-ahead goal.  "I think I caught them by surprise," said Branciforte.  "I just went in and switch to my left side and put it away."

The Owl's defense took over form there.  Goalie Eric Delisle (Amherst, N.H.), who finished with 18 saves, made two key stops on Gordon sharpshooter Dan Mitchell. And when Delisle was caught out of position, defender Neil Bermingham (West Hartford, CT) stopped a potential tying goal.

With KSC nursing its 10-9 lead, Gordon called a timeout with 32 seconds to play and set up a play where defender Andrew Beach coming in from the backfield and taking a shot.  Delisle made the save and fired the ball down the field to Branciforte who iced the game with his third goal of the game as time ran out.

KSC Coach Mark Theriault was pleased with his team's comeback effort. "After we got behind I told them to just refocus and try to come back one goal at a t time," he said.  "They knew what they had to do and got the job done.  It's a great win for the program."

Momnie also added three goals and Meade McKay (Stratham, N.H.) and Greg Richard (Nashua, N.H.) finished with two goals each for KSC.
