'MEDFORD,MASS. - Freshman midfielder Jenny Muller (Andover, MA)
scored the first two goals of her college career to lead the Tufts
University Jumbos to a 3-0 victory over the Keene State College
Owls in non-conference women's soccer action at Kraft Field on
Tuesday.
With the win, Tufts (8-4) finished its non-league schedule with
a perfect 5-0 record. Keene State (11-4-2), ranked seventh in this
week's New England poll, lost for the first time in nine games
dating back to September 28.
Making her first start, Muller put Tufts on top 1-0 by knocking
in the rebound of a shot after a Tufts corner kick in the 12th
minute. The Jumbos controlled the first 15 minutes of play and
earned a 10-4 advantage in shots for the first half overall.
Keene's best chance came with 10 minutes remaining until the break
when freshman Katie Stevens' (Londonderry, NH) long shot came to
rest in the netting at the top of the goal.
Keene worked hard to gain an advantage in the opening minutes of
the second half, but it was Tufts who scored first on a beautiful
goal by Muller. She faked a pass to leading scorer Jen Baldwin
(Medway, MA) to deke her defender and then deposited the ball in
the upper right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead in the 53rd
minute.
Barely 10 minutes later, the Tufts margin grew to 3-0 when
junior Becky Greenstein (Newton, MA) crossed the ball to wide-open
classmate Sarah Gelb (Hermosa Beach, CA) in front of the net. Gelb
beat Keene junior keeper Michelle Mason (Fairport, NY) by the right
post for her fourth goal of the season.
Tufts dominated the latter part of the match, getting numerous
changes for a fourth goal. They finished with 20 shots to 12 for
Keene. The shut out was the fourth of the year for the Jumbos, but
first since September 20. Junior Meg McCourt (Rochester, NY) had
six saves in the Tufts goal for her 12th career shutout. Mason
finished with four saves for Keene.
