KSC Field Hockey Clinches First in LEC

'KEENE, N.H. 10/25/03 - The Keene State College field hockey team clinched first place in the Little East Conference with a 8-0 shutout win over UMass-Dartmouth at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.  KSC will host the field hockey Little East Conference Tournament on November 7 (12:00 p.m.) and November 8 at Owl Athletic Complex.

   

Keene State is 13-5 overall, 9-0 in the LEC.    

 

KSC took a 1-0 lead on senior midfielder Justina Wentworth's (Keene, N.H.) first goal of the season at 25:01.   Kaitlin Henley (Somers, N.Y.) assisted on the play. 

 

Less than two minutes later, Nichole Garneau,(Twin Mountain, N.H.), with an assist by Wentworth, netted her sixth goal of the year. 

 

Wentworth netted two more goals in the first half for her third and final goal of the day.   Tanya Strong (Hatfield, Mass.) closed out the half with a goal to give her a team leading 16th of the season. 

 

KSC opened up the scoring at 31:24 in the second half with a goal from sophomore back Rachel Ladd (Bridgewater, Mass.), her first of the season.  The goal was assisted by Kerrin Delaney (Centerville, Mass.) and Abbi Pernaa (Ashby, Mass.). 

 

Keene State ended the offensive attack with goals from Michelle Leblanc (N. Pomfret, VT) and Steph Georgevits (Concord, N.H.).

 

The Owls had a 50-0 shot advantage over the Corsairs. 

  

It was the most goals scored by KSC since beating Western New England College 8-0 in the 1999 season. The Owls eight score win was just two goals shy of the 10-goal school record against Rivier College in 1981.

 

Freshman Catlin Baril (Canton, Mass.) and Michelle Codding (Jericho, VT) split time in goal for KSC.  Neither goalie made a save in the game.

 

Jessica Tavares (Dartmouth, Mass.), Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Danvers, Mass.), and Meaghan Apostolec (Plymouth, Mass.) split time in goal for UMass-Dartmouth.  Tavares started in goal with 14 saves; Fitzgerald turned aside seven shots in the second half until she was injured at six seconds left in the game and replaced by Apostolec who didn't have any saves.

 

KSC hosts Endicott College on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.).
