KEENE, N.H. 12/13/2003- Alphonse Michalski (Northampton, Mass.) scored 21 points and dished out seven assists, and Chris Timson (Beverly, Mass.) had 19, including his 1,000th career point, to lead the Keene State College men's basketball team to a 107-84 Little East Conference victory over UMass-Boston at Spaulding Gym on Saturday.
Winners of three straight, KSC (5-1, 1-0) picked up its first LEC win of the season while UMB (1-6, 0-2 LEC) suffered its sixth straight loss.
With the scored knotted at 37-all, the Owls finished the first half with a 16-2 run to take a 53-39 half-time lead. Michalski had 15 first half points for KSC.
After Jeff Deraville (Cambridge, Mass.) opened the second half with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 11 points, Keene State responded with a 20-5 run to extend its lead back up to 26 points (73-47).
The only suspense that remained was when Timson would score his 1,000th career point. That moment came at the 14:42 mark of the half when the senior forward took a feed from Michalski and went in for a lay-up to push him over the coveted plateau.
"Alphonse set me up with a great pass, I should've dunked it, " said Timson, the 23rd Owl men's player to join the 1,000-point club.
"I've know about it for a while, my roommates kept pestering me about it," Timson said. "Now I can concentrate on just playing. It feels good. I never did this in high school."
Two Owls also finished in double-figures. Sean Sullivan (Athol, Mass.) had 14 points and Matt Wheeler (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) finished with 16 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds. KSC had a 52-25 rebound advantage in the game.
James L. Hall (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Tony Jefferson (Monroe, N.J.) topped UMB with 20 points each.
Keene State gets right back on the court Sunday when they face rival Plymouth State University (1 p.m.) in the N.H. Hoops Classic at Manchester's Verizon Center.
