PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) registered
12 kills Wednesday evening at Foley Gymnasium to lead third-seeded
Plymouth State University to an easy 3-0 victory over sixth-seeded
Keene State College in the first round of the 2004 Little East
Conference Women's Volleyball Tournament.
The Panthers cruised to a 30-17, 30-16, 30-14 triumph over the
Owls, who had only six players available for the match. PSU had
needed five games to knock off Keene State earlier this season.
Plymouth State, which improved to 26-11 overall, moves on to the
LEC Tournament semifinals Friday at top-seeded Rhode Island
College. The Panthers will meet second-seeded Western Connecticut
State University at 5:30 p.m., with RIC facing fourth-seeded
Eastern Connecticut or fifth-seeded UMass Dartmouth in the other
semifinal at 7:30 p.m.
The LEC Championship match is slated for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
at RIC. The top four seeds in the tournament - RIC, WCSU, ECSU and
PSU - shared the LEC regular season title, all with 5-2 conference
records. Western Conn. is the five-time defending champion,
defeating Plymouth State in last year's championship match.
Landry, the conference leader in kills, added six digs to her
offensive performance on Wednesday. Juniors Becky Ciulla
(Chelmsford, Mass.) and Kim Krause (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) added eight
kills and seven digs apiece, and junior setter Amanda Bagwell
(Riverside, R.I.) contributed 33 assists.
Freshman Kelly Yankowski (Turners Falls, Mass.) led the Owls
with seven kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Brenna Whaley (Bedford,
N.H./West) contributed a team-high 14 digs, and freshman Lanaya
Nelson (Chester, Conn.) registered 13 assists. Keene State
concludes its season at 9-14.
