BOSTON, MASS. 12/11/04 - Four players scored 12 points or more
for the University of Massachusetts Boston men's basketball team as
it defeated visiting Keene State College, 86-78, in a Little East
Conference game Saturday at the Clark Athletic Center on the
UMass-Boston campus. The Beacons run their winning streak to three
and improve to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the LEC, while the Owls fall
to 5-3 and 1-1.
UMass-Boston snaps a 15-game losing streak to Keene State,
dating back to February 7, 1998, when it edged the Owls in Keene,
N.H., 64-62.
Following a pair of free throws by Keene State's Sean Sullivan
(Athol, Mass.), UMass-Boston held a 47-46 edge with 16:42 left in
the second half and then ripped off 13 straight points to take a
60-46 advantage with 13:31 showing in the second half. Senior guard
Eric Summerville (Little Rock, Ark.) scored six points during the
run for UMB. The Beacons owned its biggest lead of the game at
78-63 with 6:01 remaining in the contest, before the Owls came back
with a 14-3 run, fuled by nine points by Sullivan, to cut the lead
to 81-77 with 1:32 left to play in the contest, but it would be as
close as they would get.
The teams played within six points of each other in the first
half with UMass-Boston leading for most of the session, sans two
one-point leads by Keene State.
Freshman forward Alberto Paniagua (Dorchester, Mass.) led the
Beacons with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to go
with six assists, two steals, and a blocked shot, while senior
guard Roger Perry (Roxbury, Mass.) netted 14 points in addition to
a career-high 11 assists, eight rebounds, and a steal. Junior guard
Eric T. Bateman (Glassboro, N.J.) dropped in 15 points and grabbed
seven boards to go with three steals and Summerville contributed
with 12 points and a rebound.
Sullivan led the Owls with a game and season-high 24 points on
9-15 from the floor, while adding four rebounds and a block. Harley
Davis (Newburyport, Mass.) posted a triple-double with 12 points,
11 assists, a game-best 13 rebounds, and added a block. Erik
Schlacter (Marlborough, Mass.) also contributed with 10 points,
four rebounds, and two assists off the bench.
The Owls will be in action again when they travel to Phoenix,
Arizona to take on Anderson University (Ind.) on Wednesday,
December 29 (4 p.m.) in the Grand Canyon Invitational.
