'KEENE, N.H. 10/27/05 - Sophomore Renee Halsey (Francestown,
N.H.) had two goals and Breanne Lucey (Keene, N.H.) had a goal and
two assists to lead the Keene State College women's soccer team to
a 5-1 Little East Conference victory over R.I. College at Joyce
Athletic Field on Thursday. It was the 200th career win for
KSC Coach Denise Lyons.
With the win, KSC (8-5-3, 3-2-1 LEC) moves into fourth place in
the LEC standings and a step closer to hosting a first-round
conference tournament game. RIC drops to 10-5 (3-2 LEC). The
Owls wrap up their regular season schedule against UMass-Boston on
Saturday while the Anchorwomen have remaining games against Eastern
and Western Conn.
Keene State scored on its first two shots on net. Halsey
gave the Owls a 1-0 lead 1:47 into the game when she converted a
centering pass from Breanne Lucey (Keene, N.H.). Just over a
minute later, Brittany Faulkner (Lebanon, N.H.) made it a 2-0 game
with her first goal of the season off an indirect kick.
RIC cut the Owls' lead in half just before the end of the first
half on a goal by Ashley Teixeira (Warren, R.I.).
KSC scored three unanswered goals in the second half.
Halsey scored 1:28 into the half to push the Owls up to 3-1.
Tara Wagner (Avon, Conn.) netted her first of the season on a
rebound, and Leucey completed the scoring with her fifth goal of
the season following a corner kick.
Both goalies KSC's Sarah Campbell (Auburn, Mass.) and Krissie
Pyzynski (Bristol, Conn.) finished the game with eight saves.
"I'm getting good passes from my teammates and I'm just tapping
the ball past the goalie," said Halsey, who has a team-leading
eight goals this season. They do all the work."
Coach Lyons has changed the line-up up front and we're starting to
click."
"We've struggled scoring, so it was nice to find the back of the
net today," said Lyons. "We worked on finishing in practice
and I think we're making progress. Moving Renee up front has paid
off. She has the speed, finesse and touch and works well with
her teammates. Today she shined again."
"We know we had to win today to at least host a first round
game," Lyons added. "Anything can happen in the tournament.
It will be nice to get a shot at some teams that beat us earlier in
the year."
"I thought I would get the 200th win earlier in the season,
Lyons said with a laugh. I'm happy to reach the milestone,
but today it was more about getting a big win for the team and
getting ready to play in the Tournament."
Lyons, now in her 14th season at KSC has an overall record of
(200-72-19). It was ironic that Coach Lyons got her milestone
win on Joyce Field. It was the same field she played on as an
All-American
