'KEENE, N.H. 11/01/05 - Junior Breanne Lucey's (Keene, N.H.)
goal 2:35 into the second overtime lifted third seed Keene State
College to a dramatic 1-0 victory over rival and sixth seed
Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference Tournament
women's soccer quarterfinal game played Tuesday at Sumner Joyce
Field.
Keene State (10-5-3), which extended its winning streak to four
games, moves on to play second seed Western Conn. in a semifinal
round game at Eastern Conn. State University on Friday 2:30
p.m. Top seeded ECSU will face fourth seed Southern
Maine in the other semifinal game. USM edged fifth seed R.I.
College 1-0 in Tuesday's other quarterfinal contest.
Taking a feed from Courtney Gately (Canton, Mass.) out of the
left wing, Lucey beat a PSU defender and put the ball past Panther
goalie Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) for the game-winner. "I
was coming down and I saw a defender, so I took a left touch to her
side" said Lucey, describing her seventh goal of the season. "I
could care less about power, so I took a quick glance up and tapped
it in where there was an opening."
"We were a little frustrated, we had a lot of shots," she added.
"But we knew deep down we were going to do this."
"It was a nerve-wracking game," admitted KSC Coach Denise Lyons.
"They always give us a good game. We played hard and had
numerous chances, and finally were able to put the ball in the
net." Now we look forward to moving on to the semifinals.
Anything can happen."
The Owls, who outshot PSU 19-6, had several opportunities to win
the game in regulation play. Brittany Faulkner (Lebanon,
N.H.) hit the post in the final minutes of the first half. In the
second half, Lucey just missed a header on a corner kick and
Kathleen Keniston's (Minneapolis, MN) bid at the crease was denied
by Quinones. In the final seconds of regulation, Katie
Steven's (Londonderry, N.H.) drive sailed over the cross bar.
Plymouth State's best chance to score came in the opening minute
of the first overtime when Jamie Coomb's header went just over the
cross bar.
Sarah Campbell (Auburn, Mass.) had three saves to notch her
fourth shutout of the season. Quinines finished with 11 saves
for the Panthers, who conclude their season with a 4-11-2 mark.
The defending LEC champs, KSC has reached the finals six
straight years, winning the championship in 2002 and 2004.
