LEC W. Soccer: Owls Fall in Finals 2-0

'WILLIMANTIC, CONN. 11/05/05 - Jenn Orme (Centereach, N.Y.) scored a pair of first half goals to lead top seed Eastern Connecticut to a 2-0 shutout victory over third seed Keene State College in the championship game of the Little East Conference women's soccer tournament at Nevers Field in Willimantic, Conn. on Saturday.

Eastern Conn. (12-5-2) captures its second LEC title in three years and receives the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Keene State (11-6-3), which saw its five game winning streak come to an end, will now await a possible ECAC Tournament berth. KSC and ECSU have met in the last three LEC title games.  The Owls defeated the Warriors 3-0 last season, while ECSU won in penalty strokes (5-3) in 2003.

"We had nothing left in the tank after yesterday's double-overtime game," said KSC Coach Denise Lyons.  "Hopefully, we can get an ECAC bid and end the season on a bright note."

Michelle Read (Wallingford, Conn.) set up Orme for the first goal at the 8:08 mark. Orme's second goal came on a corner kick opportunity at 22:23. ECSU outshot the Owls 14-8.

Two of Keene's shots had scoring potential. Midway through the first half, junior midfielder Katie Stevens (Londonderry, NH) split two Eastern defenders and in full stride unloaded a 12-yard shot which sailed just wide of the right post. Sumecki's best save came on a looping shot by Keene freshman midfielder Laura DiSabato (Manchester, NH) with 12 minutes left. With her back to the post, Sumecki timed her leap perfectly and hauled in the shot to preserve the shutout.

Keene, which has been playing the last two weeks without top scorer Renee Halsey (Francestown, NH), lost senior stopper Missy Mengual (East Berlin, CT)  to illness ten minutes into the match.

Sarah Campbell (Auburn, Mass.) had two saves for the Owls while Allison Sumecki (Northford, Conn.) had four saves for the Warriors for the shutout.
