KEENE, N.H. 2/5/05 - The Keene State College men's basketball
team extended its season-high winning streak to six games with a
91-69 Little East Conference victory over the University of
Southern Maine at Spaulding Gym on Saturday.
David Sontag (Mont Vernon, N.H.) had 25 points including six
three-pointers to lead the Owls. Sean Sullivan (Athol, Mass.)
finished with 19 points, 13 in the second half, and Ben Maynard
(Nobleboro, Me.) added 12 rebounds for KSC (13-7, 6-4 LEC).
Jason Levecque (Westbrook, Me.) topped the Huskies (8-12, 3-6
LEC) with 22 points.
The Owls gradually pulled away from the Huskies on the way to
building a 37-29 halftime lead. Kevin Ritter's (Hopewell Junction,
N.Y.) basket following an offensive rebound gave KSC an early 20-8
lead seven minutes into the game. Sontag had 10 first half points
for the Owls including a trio of three-pointers.
The Huskies made a couple of runs at the Owls in the second
half. Ryan Garland's (Hermon, Me.) base line drive got the lead
down to three points (44-41) at the 15:29 mark.
KSC responded with a 10-3 run that included three buckets by
Sullivan to pull ahead 63-52 with 7:22 to play. Later in the half,
Sontag hit back-to-back three-pointers to extend the Owls' lead to
14 points (75-61) with just under four minutes to go.
The Owls out-rebounded the Huskies 46-32 were 22-for-29 from the
line.
KSC, which defeated USM 88-69 earlier in the season in Gorham,
have posted a 13-2 record against the Huskies since joining the LEC
and have won the last 10 games.
Keene State is at rival Plymouth State University on Tuesday
(7:30 p.m.).
