'GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Sean Panora (South
Windsor,Conn.) tallied four goals and passed out an assist to lead
the Keene State College Owls to a 15-6 victory over the University
of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's
lacrosse match played in the rain Saturday afternoon at Hodgdon
Field.
The win was the eighth straight for the Owls who are undefeated
in LEC play. The Owls are now 8-4 overall and 6-0 in the
conference. Keene State will be the top seed and receive a
first round bye in the LEC tournament that begins Tuesday.
Southern Maine finishes its season at 3-9 overall and 0-6 in the
conference.
Panora and senior Eric Momnie (South Windsor, Conn.) each scored
a pair of goals in the first quarter as the Owls staked out a 6-3
lead after 15 minutes. USM sophomore Brian White
(Gorham,Maine/Cheverus) scored twice and senior Mark St. John (Cape
Elizabeth, Maine/South Portland) once for the Huskies.
White tallied his third goal of the game late in the second
quarter to pull the Huskies within two (6-4), but senior Greg
Richard (Nashua, N.H.) restored the Owls' three-goal lead with 10
seconds left before halftime.
The Owls took command of the game in the third quarter,
outscoring the Huskies 5-0, to build a 12-4 advantage after three
periods. Richard found the net twice while Panora, Momnie and
freshman Peter Lauranzano (Beverly, Mass.) each scored once.
Panora, Lauranzano and sophomore Zach Tatge (Chappaqqua,
N.Y./Horace Greely) scored in the final period for the Owls to
offset goals by senior Matt Butler (Barnstable, Mass.) and junior
Travis Witham (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) for the Huskies.
Keene State freshman goalie Matt Johnson (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton
Academy) was credited with six saves over the first three quarters
before giving way to classmate Brad Bishop (Brunswick,Maine) for
the final period. Bishop had five saves. Juniors Mark
Morissette (Wales, Maine/Oak Hill) and Jeff Lamoureux (Walpole,
Mass.) split the goaltending chores for the Huskies.
Morissette played the first and fourth quarters making seven saves
while Lamoureux played the middle two periods, making 13 stops.
