W. Soccer: Gately Leads Owls Over Hartwick 5-2

'ONEONTA, N.Y. 9/4/05 - Playing her first game of the season, junior Courtney Gately (Canton, Mass.) netted two goals, including the eventual game-winner late in the first half, to lead the Keene State College women's soccer team to a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over host Hartwick College in the Erinn K. Bozman Memorial Cup Tournament in Oneonta, N.Y. on Sunday.

 

 

Keene State (2-0-1), which tied the University of Scranton (0-0) on Saturday, finished second in the tournament.  Alleghany, which defeated Hartwick (6-1 on Saturday) and Scranton (1-0 on Sunday) claimed the tournament title.  Hartwick falls to 0-2.

 

 

Trailing 1-0, Keene State tied the game in the 34th minute when senior defender Missy Mengual (East Berlin, Conn.) headed in a corner kick. The Hawks and Owls traded goals for the next two minutes. After Hartwick's sophomore midfielder Becca Malinowski (Livonia, N.Y.) stole a pass and scored in the 35th minute, the Owls' freshman midfielder Kathleen Keniston (Minneapolis, Minn.) tied the game just 47 seconds later off a direct kick. Junior midfielder Courtney Gately (Canton, Mass.) broke a 2-2 tie with a goal in the 37th minute. Gately took a pass from junior defender Annie Turner (Farmington, Conn.) that got by freshman goalkeeper Ashley Taylor (Nashua, N.H.).

 

 

Keene State, who led 3-2 at halftime, would tally two more goals in the second half on their way to the victory. Junior midfielder Breanne Lucey (Keene, N.H.) scored in the 76th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Tara Wagner (Avon, Conn.) and Gately registered her second goal of the game in the 78th minute to close out the scoring. Wagner finished the game with three assists.

 

 

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Campbell (Auburn, Mass.) made one save to earn her second victory of the season for the Owls.Taylor finished with a collegiate high seven saves for the Hawks.

 

 

Keene State is off until next Saturday when they host Framingham State (1 p.m.)
