LEC W. Soccer: Keniston Leads Owls Over PSU 4-1

'KEENE, N.H. 10/31/06 - Sophomore midfielder Kathleen Keniston (Minneapolis, Minn.) had two goals and an assist to lead the third-seeded Keene State College women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over sixth-seed Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference quarterfinal tournament game played Tuesday night in Keene.

Riding a season high six game winning streak, Keene State (13-7) advances to Friday's semifinals at Danbury. Conn., where they will face second seed Eastern Conn. Plymouth State concludes its season with a 7-8-2 mark.

Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead at the 12:24 mark of the first half when Jamie Coombs (Peabody, Mass.) set up Brittany Phelps (Bow, N.H.).

Keene State scored two goals within a span to take a 2-1 halftime lead. Keniston finished off a cross from Courtney Gately (Canton, Mass.) and Tara Wagner (Avon, Conn.) converted a cross from Keniston. KSC goalie Liz Rosen (Swanzey, N.H.) preserved the Owls' lead with a diving save against Gianna Minervini (Point Pleasant, N.J.) later in the half.

Keniston gave Keene State a 3-1 lead with her second goal of the game, and seventh of the season, at the 71:15 mark of the second half. A header by Renee Halsey (Francestown, N.H.) sent Keniston in on the breakaway.

Keniston praised her teammates for her performance.  "It's really a team effort, said Keniston. "I'm just at the top hoping to get the ball into the goal.

"Kat has really stepped up her game," said KSC Coach Denise Lyons.  "She never stops running and makes other teams make mistakes."  Tonight she capitalized on her opportunities."

Amy St. John (Barre, Vt.) completed the scoring for the Owls when she headed in a corner kick from Wagner, who finished the game with a goal and an assist.

Rosen, who had a strong game in goal, finished with 12 saves. Morgan McQuaide (Westerly, R.I.) turned aside three shots for the Panthers.
