LEC Field Hockey: Owls Capture Championship 2-1

'KEENE, N.H.  11/04/06 - Amanda Rosenbeck's (Wilder, Vt.) goal at the 57:06 mark of the second half broke a 1-1 tie and gave top seed Keene State College a 2-1 victory over second seed UMass-Dartmouth in the championship game of the Little East Conference field hockey tournament played in Keene on Saturday.

It was the 10th straight win for Owls (18-4), who captured their third straight LEC title (2004-06) and fifth overall championship (1998-99).

After an early flurry by KSC, the Corsair just missed getting on the board after Robin Dziedzic (Palmer, Mass.) hit off the post.

Minutes later, freshman Karen Robinson (Barre, Mass.) who was named the tournament's most outstanding player, gave KSC a 1-0 lead when she tapped in a rebound of Sam Blanchard's (Amesbury, Mass.) shot at the 20:44 mark for her eighth goal of the season.  "It was loose in front and I was able to get the ball under the goalie, "said Robinson.  "When we had the opportunities, we did what we had to do."

UMass-Dartmouth tied the score at the 42:27 mark of the second half on a corner play.  Dziedzic took a feed from Amy McGillicuddy (Foxboro, Mass.) and fired a shot by KSC goalie Sara Joyce (Hampstead, N.H.).

UMD goalie Liz Fitzgerald (Danvers, Mass.) kept it a 1-1 game when she made a diving saves off the Owls' Steph Georgevits (Concord, Mass.) with 15:44 to play.

The winning goal by Rosenbeck, her 13th of the season, came on a corner play. " It's a play we usually use in a pinch," said Rosenbeck.  "It was a give-and-go with Karen (Robinson) that that seems to work, and it happened again today."

Joyce finished the game with seven saves for the Owls while Fitzgerald turned aside five shots for the Corsairs (17-4), who will not await a possible ECAC tournament berth.

"We had to fight for everything in the tournament," said KSC Coach Amy Watson.  "Today, we made some sacrifices with our game plan offensively and tried to solidify our defense.  Fortunately, we were able go generate some offense when we needed it."

Keene State will find out the details about its NCAA game when the field is announced on Sunday night.  It will be the team's fifth trip to the tournament.  "We'd like to get a home NCCA game, but we'll just wait to see what the call brings," Watson said.

Keene State, which defeated UMD 2-1 earlier in the season, owns a 13-0 record against the Corsairs since joining the LEC in 1997.  It was the first time the two teams have met in the finals.
