Owls Sweep RIC To Claim Reg. Season LEC Title

Providence, RI 10/20/07 - Keene State College captured the 2007 Little East Conference Women¹s Volleyball Regular Season Championship in a 3-0 win over Rhode Island College Saturday morning at The Murray Center. Its' the Owls first ever LEC title. 

The Owls improve their record to 19-10 overall and keep their league record unblemished with a perfect 6-0 mark. KSC will receive a bye in the upcoming LEC Tournament and host the semifinals and finals on Nov. 2-3.
     

The Anchorwomen see their record to fall to 15-13 overall and 2-2 in LEC action.  
     
 
Rhode Island College jumped out to leads of 9-2 and 21-13 lead in game one, before Keene State climbed back into the frame and held off the Anchorwomen at the end, 30-28. The Owls won game two, 30-24, before decisively taking the match in a game three, 30-16, win. It was the Owls fist win over RIV in four years.


"I expected a much tougher match," said KSC Coach Bob Weiner.  But once we caught them in game one we never let up and stayed on a roll."


"This is a great win for us.  "We not only get the first-round by and get to the host the semifinals and finals of the tournament, but also join the other KSC programs who have captured numerous LEC championships.
     
 
Keene State sophomore Carly Newton (Centerville, MA) and junior Brittany O¹Bryant (Merrimack, NH) led the team with 16 and 10 kills, respectively, from the middle blocker position. Sophomore setter Jordan Pokryfki (Wasilla,
AK) posted a match-high 32 assists, while senior outside hitter Kelly Yankowski (Turners Falls, MA) logged a match-high 24 digs to go with eight kills.
     
 
Rhode Island College senior middle blocker Kimiyo Garcia (Riverside, RI) led the Anchorwomen with 11 kills and eight digs. Freshman setter Nicole Enos (Coventry, RI) logged 15 assists and six digs.
     

Keene State will take part in the Bridgewater State Invitational on Friday, Oct. 26.
