CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Keene St. women's soccer team scored a pair
of long-range first-half goals and held on to earn a 2-1 win over
Cortland in the season opener for both schools in day one of the
Cortland Invitational. The Red Dragons host Wilkes, who lost 2-0 to
Nazareth on Saturday, on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., while the Owls face
the
Golden Flyers Sunday at 11 a.m.
Cortland had the best of play early in the game, but the Red
Dragons couldn't capitalize on some good scoring chances. The Owls
turned th momentum with two goals a little more than two minutes
apart in the first half. Junior Michelle Boland (Worcester,
MA/Worcester Academy)
netted the first score in the 20th minute with a one-time shot from
18 yards out that bent inside the left post. Senior Kathleen
Keniston(Minneapolis, MN/Holy Angels) assisted on the goal when she
touched a pass to Boland. In the 22nd minute, Keene St. took
advantage of a
turnover when junior Sasha Daniels
(Hillsboro,NH/Hillsboro-Deering)lofted a high 30-yard shot that
snuck into the top corner.
Cortland pulled to within 2-1 early in the second half. Senior
Mandy Womelsdorf (Buffalo/West Seneca West) sent a through pass to
junior Katie Trivisonno (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) on the left
side. Trivisonno collected the pass and slid a low shot under Keene
St. junior goalie Samantha Hirsch (Holliston, MA/Holliston) and
inside
the left post in the 49th minute.
The Owls limited Cortland's chances for the remainder of the game,
holding the Red Dragons to three more shots in the half and 10 for
the game. Hirsch finished the game with five saves, while Cortland
senior goalie Megan Thayer (Walworth/Wayne Central) also stopped
five
shots.
