KEENE STATE OWLS

Men's Basketball

Owls Race By Beacons 72-55

KEENE, N.H. 1/19/08 - Keene State College men's basketball came alive after a sluggish first half to post a 72-55 Little East Conference victory over UMass-Boston at Spaulding Gym on Saturday.
Leading by just one at the half (25-24), the Owls (9-6, 3-2 LEC) outscored the Beacons 47-31 in the second period.

Junior forward Tyler Kathan (Ludlow, Vt.) had 17 points and 12 rebounds and senior forward Travon Little (Danbury, Conn.) finished with 12 points and a career high 18 rebounds to lead the owls to their third win in four games.

Sophomore center Terrell Maddox (Hyannis, Mass.) had 11 points and nine rebounds and freshman guard Anthony Brewster finished with 11 points and five rebounds to lead UMass-Boston (1-14, 0-5 LEC).

The Owls scored the first 10 points of the game.  UMB fought its way back taking its first lead 24-22 when Anthony Matlock (Seattle, WA.) stole the ball, and was fouled after hitting a lay-up.

KSC regained the lead (25-24) on a steal and lay-up by freshman guard Tavon Brantley (Bridgeport, Conn.) in the closing seconds of the half.

After a pair of free throws by Brewster cut the Owls' lead to 39-38 at the 11:40 mark of the second half, KSC took advantage of three consecutive Beacons turnovers to go up by 11 (49-38) with 10:03 to play.  Kathan had four of the Owls' points in the 10-0 run that was capped off by three-point hoops by Anthony Licitra (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Kevin Ritter (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.).

"We needed to speed up the tempo because we were getting bogged down," said KSC Coach Rob Colbert.  "The faster tempo allowed us to get some easy shots and take the pressure off of us."

The Owls held the Beacons to just a 29% shooting form the field (19-65) and held a 54-40 advantage on the boards.

On Tuesday, KSC hosts rival Plymouth State while UMB is home to face Southern Maine (7:30 p.m.).
