KEENE, N.H. 1/8/08 - Keene State College junior forward Tyler
Kathan (Ludlow, Vt.) scored a season-high 31 points, including the
1,000th of his career and pulled down 15 rebounds, but SUNY-New
Paltz spoiled the occassion by posting a 90-86 ovetime victory over
the Owls in a non-conference men's basketball game played at
Spaulding Gym on Tuesday night.
KSC, which have lost five out of its last six games, falls to
6-5. New Paltz improves to 4-5.
Entering the game six points shy of the 1,000-point plateau,
Kathan didn't waste any time reaching the milestone. He scored the
Owls first six points of the game including his 1,000th career
point on a lay-up at the 16:13 mark of the first half. Kathan, who
becomes the 27th KSC men's player and just the sixth junior to hit
the milestone, said it was a bittersweet honor.
"People started talking about it at the start of the year and I
figured it would come in time," he said. "It's nice and one
of the things I wanted to do, but I want our team to be more
successful."
Kathan scored 22 first half points and senior guard Anthony
Licitra hit a buzzer-beating lay-up as Keene State went to the
locker room with a 47-36 lead.
KSC appeared in control, opening up a 15 point lead (62-47) at
the 12:14 mark of the second half. But the Hawks went on
a 23-3 run to take a 70-65 lead with with 5:51 to play.
A free throw by junior forward Kyle Nelson (Port Ewen, N.Y.) put
New Paltz up 79-77 with 12 seconds to play in regulation.
Kathan sent the game into overtime (79-all) when he hit a fall
away jumper from the left of the key with one second on the
clock.
In the overtime, junior guard Matt Hauser (Williston, N.Y.)
conected on a long three-pointer to put the Hawks up by five
(86-81) with 1:48 to go.
A conventional three-point play by junior forward Nate Anderson
(Westminster, Mass.) cut the lead to two (86-84) with 53 seconds to
play. Hauser hit three free throws in the closing seconds as
the Hawks held off the Owls.
Senior forward Travon Little (Danbury, Conn.) finished with 19
points for Keene State.
Nelson topped the Hawks with 26 points and 15 rebounds and
Hauser finished with 17 points.
KSC travels to Springfield College on Thursday.
