Owls Fall to UNE in ECAC Semifinals

KEENE, N.H.  11/15/08 - Freshman forward Sarah Richardson's (Rochester, N.H.) goal at the 95:08 mark of overtime lifted fourth seed University of New England to a 2-1 upset victory over top seed Keene State College in a semifinal game of the ECAC Division III women's soccer tournament at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.

UNE (15-5), making its first trip to the tournament, moves on to the finals against the winner of the second semifinal between #1 Brandeis and #6 Emmanuel. The championship will be played at the highest remaining seed.

Keene State concludes its season with a 16-8 mark.

Freshman back Jessy Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.) put the ball into the box to set up the game-winner.  Richardson and KSC junior goalie Samantha Hirsh (Holliston, Mass.) collided and the ball dribbled into the net.

UNE junior goalie Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.) made a couple of early saves off of senior midfielder Michelle Boland (Worcester, Mass.) and junior midfielder Molly Brunelle (Walpole, N.H.) to keep the Owls off the board.

Boland didn't miss on her next shot, scoring on a rebound to give Keene State a 1-0  lead at the 14:47 mark;

The Nor'easters tied the score at the 30:10 mark when sophomore midfielder Kristin Meza (San Diego, Ca.) drove a loose ball from 18-yards out into the top corner of the net.

The Owls had a pair of strong scoring opportunities at the 24:30 mark of the second half.  A direct kick from 35-yards out was tipped off the cross bar by Engel.  Sophomore forward Nora Mahoney (Belchertown, Mass.) got a foot on the rebound that was stopped by Engle.

The Nor'easters came close to getting the go ahead goal with 3:45 to play. On a corner opportunity, freshman midfielder Alice Read (Auburn, Me.) bid went just wide of the post.

Katie Bradford (Lebanon, N.H.) had a chance to give KSC the win in the first minutes of overtime, but her drive sailed just over the cross bar.

Hirsh finished the game with two saves for the Owls.  Engel stopped 11 shots for the University of New England.
