KEENE, N.H. 2/19/08 - Senior forward Travon
Little (Danbury, Conn.) scored 21 points, including the 1,000th
of his career to lead the Keene State men's basketball team to a
105-72 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University before a
Senior night crowd at Spaulding Gym on Tuesday night.
The Owls, who snapped a two-game losing streak with the win,
move into a tie for third place with Southern Maine as the Huskies
lost to Plymouth State 54-53 in Gorham, ME.
Four consecutive points on a basket, a steal, and a pair of free
throws by senior guard Anthony Licitra (Glastonbury, Conn.) gave
KSC a 10 point lead (41-31) with 5:08 to go in the first half.
The Warriors ran off the next 11 points to take a 42-41 lead on
a shot from the line by senior forward Leon Martin (Woodbury,
Conn.) with 2:07 to play in the half.
KSC, which hit 10 of 11 shots from the line, came back to take a
one point (45-44) halftime lead.
At the 13:38 mark of the second half, Little scored his 1,000th
career point. The senior forward took a lead pass from Tyler Kathan
and slammed home the ball to the delight of the crowd that gave him
a standing ovation. Little, who played two seasons at Rhode Island
Community College, joins Kathan as the second Owl men's player to
reach the milestone this season, and the 28th overall to join the
1,000-point career club. Little said he wasn't even aware of the
milestone. "I didn't know anything about it," he said. "I didn't
think I was going to reach it, transferring to different schools.
It's a great feeling."
Little ignited the Owls scoring six more points after the dunk,
giving KSC a 74-57 lead on a put-back with 10:12 to go. "I saw the
mismatch. They had a guard on me. I just tried to get to the right
spots and I could contribute from there."
The lead was never threatened the rest of the way. Back-to-back
three balls by Kathan pushed Keene's lead up to 23 points (84-61)
with 7:33 to play.
The Owls, who netted 10 three-pointers in the game, had five
players finish in double figures. In addition to Little, Kathan had
17 points, Nick Drouin (Weare, N.H.) had 14, and Kevin Ritter
(Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and Anthony Licitra (Glastonbury, Conn.)
finished with 10 points each.
Junior guard Larry Kelly (New Haven, Conn.) had 19 points and
senior center Kevin Zalucki (Enfield, Conn.) pulled down 12
rebounds for the Warriors (12-11, 5-8 LEC). KSC swept the season
series winning 97-71 in Willimantic.
Prior to the game, Keene State honored its seven seniors; Shiwon
Davis (Bridgeport, Conn.), Travon
Little (Danbury, Conn.), Sandel
White (Danbury, Conn.) Nick
Drouin (Weare, N.H.), Kevin
Ritter (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), Anthony
