KEENE, N.H., 05/1/08 - Sophomore attack Andrew Beriberi's (Islip
Terrace, N.Y.) goal at the 2:19 mark of overtime lifted third seed
Western Conn. State University to a 14-13 upset win over second
seed and defending LEC champ Keene State College in a semifinal
game of the Little East Conference tournament played Thursday
afternoon in Keene.
The Colonials (12-6), who posted their first ever win over the Owls
(9-3), will host the championship game against fifth seed Plymouth
State, which upset top seed Eastern Conn. 11-10 (2-OT) in the other
semifinal action. It will be WCSU first trip to the title
game.
Sophomore attack Adam Lanehart (Redding, Conn.), who finished with
six goals, made his only assists of the game count when he fed
Barbieri, who beat KSC senior goalie Matt Johnson (Derry, N.H.)
with a hard shot to the far corner.
Trailing 2-0 two minutes in the game, the Owls netted the next six
goals to go up 6-2 at the end of the first quarter. Senior
midfielder Mike Fontaine (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and
senior attack Tony Santa Fe had two goals each in
the Owls' comeback.
Both teams scored twice in the second half as KSC took an 8-4
halftime lead.
After senior midfielder Casey Broderson (Derry,
N.H.) scored the first goal of the third quarter, the Colonials
scored four unanswered goals to make it a 9-8 game.
The Owls responded with a three goal run of their own. Fontaine
scored consecutive goals, his third and fourth of the game to put
KSC on top 12-8.
With KSC nursing a two goal lead (12-10) heading in the fourth
quarter, WCSU got a pair of goals from Linehart and a tally from
Barbieri to knot the score as 12-all at the 6:58 mark.
Senior Midfielder Ryan Hazelton (Chester, N.H.)
scored to give KSC a 13-12 lead with 5:39 to go, but senior
midfielder Dennis Skarda (Danbury, Conn.) would send the game into
overtime with a goal with 32 seconds remaining on the clock.
"We had a lot of opportunities in the third and fourth quarter and
couldn't put the game away," said KSC Coach Mark
Theriault. "Give them credit; they did a great job coming
back."
Santa Fe and Hazelton had two goals for KSC, which also got single
goals from Josh Nugent (Cheshire, Conn.),
Michael Araujo (Southborough, Mass.) Riley
Benson (Hampstead, N.H.), and Easton
Kezer (Derry, N.H.). Senior attack Peter
Lauranzano (Beverly, Mass.) dished out five assists.
Barbieri had four goals for the Colonials, who also got goals from
George Tsirigotis (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), Mike Barnao (Sayville,
N.Y.), and Terry Stroz (Monroe, Conn.).
Johnson stopped 10 shots for KSC. Junior goalie Kyle Wood
(Hyde Park, N.Y.) made 15 saves for the Colonials.
