PURCHASE, N.Y. -
Trinity (Conn.) College junior Caitlin Prendergast scored her first
goal ofthe season in strange fashion and it proved to be the
match-winner as the Bantams outlasted Keene State College, 3-2, in
game three of the 2008 Valiant Classic, held at GoValiants.com
Field on Sunday afternoon.
Prendergast and the Trinity
offensive unit were retreating after a foul was called on the
Bantams off a corner kick, but Keene State goaltender
Samantha Hirsh muffed the resulting free kick and
the ball came right to Prendergast, who easily slotted the ball
into an open net with 11:28 remaining in the second half.
The tally completed a three-goal rally for Trinity, which
found itself down by a goal less than 10 minutes into the first
half after another rare circumstance resulted in a Keene State
goal. In the 10th minute of play, Hirsh boomed a punt that bounced
twice over the heads of the entire Bantam defense, sending
Katie Bradford in on a breakaway that the
sophomore converted to give the Owls a 1-0 lead 9:18 into the
match.
Trinity responded 10:30 after Bradford's goal, parlaying
another misplay by Hirsh into an easy goal. Off a corner kick
by junior Lauren Olsen, the ball went right through the hands of
Hirsh to a waiting Leigh Howard, who tapped the ball into an empty
net for her first goal of the season.
The teams remained knotted at one until the 64th minute of
play, when the Bantams used a quick counterattack to take the lead.
Freshman Jenny Ley took the ball down the right side and fired a
long cross across the penalty box, with Howard drawing defenders to
her before dummying the ball through her legs to a wide-open Shawna
Altdorf, who had a wide-open attempt on net.
Keene State got back to within a goal with 7:33 remaining
in the match, after freshman Shannon Hennessey
converted a penalty kick. Classmate Alexsia Karamourtopoulos was
taken down from behind in the penalty box, setting up Hennessey's
goal, her first of the season.
The match was evenly played throughout, as both teams put
five shots on goal. Keene State held a 12-8 advantage in
overall shots, but Trinity was able to force five corner kicks and
keep the Owls from attempting even one. Trinity netminder
Lily Pepper picked up the win for Trinity, stopping three shots on
five attempts. Hirsh made two saves on five attempts for Keene
State to take the loss.
Trinity, which was the only team to go undefeated at this
year's Valiant Classic, will take on the Classic's host,
Manhattanville College, on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in Hartford,
Conn. Keene State will take on Smith College on Wednesday at 7:00
