Owls drop non-conference game to Amherst 4-1

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. 10/19/09 - Freshman Emily Little (Sherborn, Mass.) netted two goals to lead #15 Amherst College to a 4-1 win over Keene State College in non-conference women's soccer action at Owl Athletic Complex on Monday night.

Freshman Joan Hamel (Weare, N.H.) scored the lone goal for the owls in the second half.

Keene State drops to 11-4-1 while Amherst (10-2) extended its winning streak to five games.

Freshman Kathryn Nathan (Pemborke, Mass.) gave Amherst College a 1-0 lead at the 13:03 mark of the first half.  Taking a crossing ball from junior Kyla Woodhouse (Topsham, Me.), Nathan shot from the top of the box eluded the grasp of KSC sophomore goalie Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass.).

Dempsey kept it a one goal game when she came out of the net and got a foot on a breakaway bid by Little at the 25:16 mark.

Little didn't miss the next time.  With Dempsey pulled out of the net, She put the ball into an open net to extend the Lord Jeffs lead to 2-0 with 10 minutes to play in the half.

Little made it a 3-0 game 26 seconds into the second half with her second goal of the game, a shot from the left side that found the far back corner of the net.

Junior Katie Bradford (Lebanon, N.H.) had the best chance to get KSC on the board, but her drive from inside the box hit off the outside post.

Murphy added to the Lord Jeffs lead with a goal at the 52:44 mark. Junior Caitlin O'Malley (Medfield, Mass.) assisted on the goal.

Hamel (Weare, N.H.) prevented the shutout with her third goal in the last three games to make it a 4-1.

At the 17:20 mark, Little, looking for the hat trick, broke in alone, but Dempsey came out and got a hand on her shot. Later in the half, Dempsey, who tied a career high with seven saves, came out of her net again and denied an attempt by freshman Hannah Cooper (Bethesda, MD).

Sophomore Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, Conn.) started in goal for Amherst and made two saves.  She increased her active shutout streak to 386:00 minutes.  Sophomore Claire Bennett played the final 30 minutes and also stopped a pair of Owl shots.

Keene State hosts Williams on Wednesday.  Amherst entertains Wesleyan on Saturday.
