Box Score KEENE, N.H. 10/19/09 - Freshman Emily Little (Sherborn, Mass.)
netted two goals to lead #15 Amherst College to a 4-1 win over
Keene State College in non-conference women's soccer action at Owl
Athletic Complex on Monday night.
Freshman Joan Hamel (Weare, N.H.) scored the
lone goal for the owls in the second half.
Keene State drops to 11-4-1 while Amherst (10-2) extended its
winning streak to five games.
Freshman Kathryn Nathan (Pemborke, Mass.) gave Amherst College a
1-0 lead at the 13:03 mark of the first half. Taking a
crossing ball from junior Kyla Woodhouse (Topsham, Me.), Nathan
shot from the top of the box eluded the grasp of KSC sophomore
goalie Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass.).
Dempsey kept it a one goal game when she came out of the net and
got a foot on a breakaway bid by Little at the 25:16 mark.
Little didn't miss the next time. With Dempsey pulled out
of the net, She put the ball into an open net to extend the Lord
Jeffs lead to 2-0 with 10 minutes to play in the half.
Little made it a 3-0 game 26 seconds into the second half with
her second goal of the game, a shot from the left side that found
the far back corner of the net.
Junior Katie Bradford (Lebanon, N.H.) had the
best chance to get KSC on the board, but her drive from inside the
box hit off the outside post.
Murphy added to the Lord Jeffs lead with a goal at the 52:44
mark. Junior Caitlin O'Malley (Medfield, Mass.) assisted on the
goal.
Hamel (Weare, N.H.) prevented the shutout with her third goal in
the last three games to make it a 4-1.
At the 17:20 mark, Little, looking for the hat trick, broke in
alone, but Dempsey came out and got a hand on her shot. Later in
the half, Dempsey, who tied a career high with seven saves, came
out of her net again and denied an attempt by freshman Hannah
Cooper (Bethesda, MD).
Sophomore Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, Conn.) started in goal for
Amherst and made two saves. She increased her active shutout
streak to 386:00 minutes. Sophomore Claire Bennett played the
final 30 minutes and also stopped a pair of Owl shots.
Keene State hosts Williams on Wednesday. Amherst
entertains Wesleyan on Saturday.
