Box Score KEENE, N.H. 11/29/09 - Sophomore guard Shereef Taylor's (Hyde
Park, N.Y.) deep three-pointer from the right side with four
seconds to play in the second overtime lifted SUNY-New Paltz to a
110-109 non-conference men's basketball victory over Keene State
College at Spaulding Gym on Sunday afternoon.
After opening its season with a couple of wins, the Owls (2-3)
dropped their third straight game. New Paltz improves to
3-2. It was KSC's first multiple overtime game since
Dec. 6, 2006 when it lost to Tufts 118-109 in triple-overtime.
Keene State trailed 87-82 with 1:24 to go in regulation.
The Owls scored the final five points on lay-ups by sophomore guard
Steve Boudreau (North Andover, Mass.) and
sophomore forward Derek D'Amours (Agawam, Mass.)
and a free throw with 7.4 seconds to go by sophomore guard
Cody Snow (Leyden, Mass.) to tie the game at
87-all.
Sophomore forward Jayquan Anderson (Bronx, N.Y.) had a chance to
win the game for New-Paltz in the closing seconds, but his shot was
off-target.
In the first overtime, Taylor hits a pull-up jumper in the lane
giving the Hawks a 97-95 lead with 30.9 seconds to play.
Freshman swingman Anthony Mariano (Naugatuck,
Conn.) found freshman forward Eric Fazio (Hopewell
Junction, N.Y.) down low for a lay-up that knotted the
score at 97-all with 11.2 seconds on the
clock.
Freshman guard Nick Taldi Merrick, N.Y.) missed a baseline
three-pointer with time running out to send the game into the
second overtime.
In the second overtime, Keene State took a 108-102 lead on a
three-pointer from the right corner by Boudreau with 1:35 to go.
Taldi netted a three-pointer to make it 108-105 with 53 seconds
to play. Following a KSC turnover, Wichard hit a lay-up to
make it a one-point game (108-107) with 13 seconds left.
Mariano was fouled on the inbounds play. He missed the
first one, but hit the second to give the Owls a 109-107 lead with
12.4 seconds to go.
That set the stage for the game-winning three-pointer by Taylor,
who rose up over an Owl defender and hit the long-range shot.
The loss spoiled career games for a pair of Keene State
players. Fazio finished with 22 points and Boudreau scored 16
points. Fazio hit all his 11 shots from the field, putting
him in the KSC record book for field goal pct. (1.000) in a game.
D'Amours added 20 points, Snow scored 19 points to go with a team
high nine rebounds, and Mariano finished with 12 points.
KSC hurt itself at the line, connecting on just 11 of 21
attempts (52%).
Wichard and Taylor shared game-high honors with 27 points each
for the Hawks. Anderson had 22 points with nine rebounds, and
Taldi scored 13 points for New Paltz. Senior guard Oppong
Agyemang (Windsor, Conn.) dished out 12 assists.
Both teams return to the court on Tuesday, Keene State is at
Springfield College (7 p.m.) and New Paltz is home to face Vassar
College.
