KEENE, N.H. 11/03/09 - The #4 seed Keene State
College women's volleyball team was upset by #5 seed Rhode Island
College 3-2 (17-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 15-11) Tuesday night at
Spaulding Gymnasium. The Anchormen (18-18) will advance to the LEC
Semifinals, where they will travel to #1 seed UMass-Boston on
Friday night.
The Owls (18-17) jumped out to a 25-17 win in game one behind
sophomore Bridget O'Bryant's (Merrimack, N.H.) six
kills on 11 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage. Senior setter
Jordan Pokryfki's (Wasilla, Alaska) put up 13
assists to pace the Owls attack.
In game two, RIC would answer as freshman setter Jessica
Ho (Providence, R.I.) would put up ten assists and
freshman middle blocker Kalyn Archer (Warwick,
R.I.) had three kills to total six on the match.
In game three Ho's service ace nodded the score at 23 but Keene
State would take a 2-1 lead on a kill from sophomore middle blocker
Ellyse Davis (Londonderry, N.H.). The Owls were
paced again by Pokryfki with 14 assists and eight kills from
O'Bryant.
The Owls looked to close out the Anchormen in game four jumping
out to a 16-12 lead on a service ace from senior libero
Abby Rosen (Hebron, Conn.). RIC would fight back
with five kills from junior April Oberhelman (Woonsocket,
R.I.) and junior outside hitter Tess Heidel
(Warwick, R.I.) would serve out the last four points to
force a fifth and deciding game.
RIC took control of game five, hopping out to a 10-4 lead before
KSC head coach Bob Weiner was forced to call a
timeout. The Owls came out firing, as Davis would smash five
straight kills to make it 10-9. The Anchorman bounced back and
Heidel's block sealed the deal for RIC and the 3-2 road victory
over Keene State.
O'Bryant's 23 kills was a career-high, and one off the school
record for kills in a match held by her sister Brittany
O'Bryant on September 19th, 2006 against Colby
Sawyer. Davis was right behind her with 19 kills, while Pokryfki
put up 53 assists and 12 digs in the losing effort. Rosen had a
game-high 25 digs.
RIC was led by Breanna Boyer's (West Greenwich,
R.I.) 18 kills and Ho's 56 assists. Oberhelman and
Sharon Corriveau (Coventry, R.I.) had 12 and 11
kills respectively in the win.
