2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Tournament Final Day Recap

KEENE, N.H. (12/29/09) - The 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Tournament concluded Tuesday night with Conant winning the red division 58-48 and Plymouth winning the white division 49-43.

Con-Val 61, Newport 30

KEENE, N.H. (12/29/09) - On the final day of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, Con-Val Regional dropped Newport 61-30 in the white division consolation game on Tuesday morning.

In the first half, the Con-Val Cougars led by as many as 24, and took a 36-15 lead into the break. The Cougar offense was powered by 28 points in the paint and 18 points off of 16 Newport Tiger turnovers.

Con-Val was led by Jared Orazio's 10 points and five rebounds and Gregory Carter's eight points off the bench.

Newport was out-rebounded 25-9 over the first 16 minutes, and was led in scoring by Greg Beaulieu with five points.

The Cougars extended their lead to as many as 35 in the second half, and caused 26 more Tiger turnovers for 42 on the game. Orazio finished with a game-high 15 points and a team-high six boards. Carter was the only other Con-Val player in double figures with 10 points.

Ethan Gardner had 10 points to lead Newport scorers. Syd Lorandeau pulled down a team-high six boards in the losing effort.

Goffstown 52, Fall Mountain 32

KEENE, N.H. (12/29/09) - On the final day of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, the Goffstown Grizzlies toppled the Fall Mountain Wildcats 52-32 for fifth place in the White division.

Goffstown took a 29-11 lead into the locker room by scoring 19 points off turnovers. Grizzlies guard Alex Wageling had 10 first-half points while forward Matt Riehl grabbed a team-high four rebounds and scored six points.

The Wildcats had only two players score in the first half, with Jake Wright getting seven points and eight rebounds. Eric Bentley provided the other four points for Fall Mountain off the bench.

The second-half was much of the same, as Goffstown would extend their lead to as many as twenty four times en route to the 52-32 win. Fall Mountain outrebounded the Grizzlies 39-36, but shot only 24% (11-45) and did not make a three-pointer, while Goffstown shot 40% (19-48) as a team in their second victory of the tournament.

Stevens 63, Hinsdale 38

KEENE, N.H. (12/29/09) - On the final day of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, the Stevens Cardinals topped the Hinsdale Pacers for third place in the white division on Tuesday afternoon.

In the first half, Hinsdale was outrebounded 24-19, and Stevens scored 20 of their 27 points in the paint for the 27-15 lead. Kevin O'Connor led all scorers with eight points and eight rebounds in the first 16 minutes. Cam Blewitt pitched in with seven points off the bench for the Cardinals.

The Pacers were led by Michael Johnson's five points, while Riley Coleman and Bryant Kenndy pulled down three caroms.

Stevens continued to apply pressure in the second-half, shooting 16-of-28 (57%) from the floor and pulling away with a 63-38 victory. O'Connor finished with 13 points and 13 boards in 19 minutes of action. Zach Fitzherbert and Zach Melcher each finished with 10 points in the victory.

Hinsdale was led by Rogers with 11 points. Kenndy and Coleman with six boards apiece.

Stevens finishes the tournament 2-1, while Hinsdale falls to 1-2.

Coe-Brown 64, Monadnock 22

KEENE, N.H. (12/29/09) - On the final day of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, the Coe-Brown Bears defeated the Monadnock Huskies 64-22 on Tuesday afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium.

In the first half, Coe-Brown jumped out to a 25-15 lead over the Huskies. Sophomore forward Skyler Mitchell led all scorers with 14 points. Senior forward Mark Hodgdes pulled down four boards and snagged four steals.

Monadnock had 14 turnovers and only one assist in the first half while shooting 6-of-18 from the floor and 0-of-6 from beyond the arc. Cory Barnes had nine points for the Huskies and two steals.

The Bears outscored the Huskies 39-7 in the second half and caused 16 more Monadnock turnovers en route to a 64-22 victory.

Mitchell ended the game with a game-high 19 points, while Hodgdes netted 11 points and five boards in the win. Monadnock was led by Barnes' nine points. Matt Tommila scored five points and pulled down a game-high 10 boards before fouling out.

Coe-Brown finished the tournament 1-2, while Monadnock ended 0-3.

Milford 64, Souhegan 47

KEENE, N.H. (12/29/09) - On the final day of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, Mildford beat Souhegan by a final score of 64-47 on December 29 in Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Spartans quickly led in the contest, and went up by as many as 19 points. The first half difference was points in the paint, where Milford scored 28 points and holding the Sabers to just 10.

 Milford was led by Kyle Nelson, who dropped 13 first half points on six-of-eight shooting. Also for the Spartans, Mike O'Loughlin had nine points, four rebounds and three steals. Mike Mitchell chipped in with eight points and assisted on five Milford baskets

Souhegan's D.J. Petropolous had six points on 50% shooting (3-6) and three rebounds. Seth Cordts had five points and went three-of-three from the free throw line.

In the fourth quarter, Souhegan would climb back to make it a 12 point game. Devin Gilligan scored a team high 12 points and shot two-of-three from three point range. Cordts finished the game with 10 points and was perfect from the line (3-3).

Milfdord's Nelson was the game high scorer with 15 points on seven-of-nine shooting. O'Loughlin chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds, and Mitchell added 11 points and 6 assists.

Keene 49, Smithfield (RI) 43

KEENE, N.H. (12/29/09) - On the final day of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, Keene defeated Smithfield (RI) by a score of 49-43 at Spaulding Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Smithfield (RI) went up by a score of 26-12, which was the largest lead of the first half, with five minutes remaining in the half. Despite the Sentinels efforts those last five minutes belonged to the Blackbirds of Keene, when they went on a 15-0 run to end the half.

Keene was helped by Nicholas Nelson who had 10 points to go along with six rebounds and was one-of-one from three point land.

For Smithfield, Aaron Brown had a team high nine points on four-of-seven shooting. Kyle Morvan led the team hauling in seven rebounds.

Smithfield started the second half ending their six minute scoring drought when Terrance Manning scored a fast break layup to give them the lead for the first time since the first half. The rest of the second half saw no lead larger than 6 points.

The Blackbirds leading scorer, Nelson, finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Taylor Russell had nine points and 11 rebounds, while Theodore Speas 10 points and 8 boards.

For Smithfield, Morvan had 17 rebounds and six points. Brown ended with 15 points on eight-of-seventeen shooting.

Plymouth 49, Mascenic 43

KEENE, N.H. (12/29/09) - On the final day of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, Plymouth defeated Mascenic 49-43 in Spaulding Gymnasium on December 29th at 7:00 P.M. The game was the White division Championship.

In the first half, Plymouth would jump out to early lead and would not lose it, leading by as many as eight with 6:30 to go in the second quarter. The Bobcats were led by Jack Ringling, who had 12 points on four-of-ten shooting. Taylor Newberry added four points and four rebounds.

Mascenic was led by Mickey Martel who was two-of-five from the floor for four points, also adding two rebounds. Damon Salo had seven rebounds to lead the game.

Midway through the third quarter, the resilient Vikings found a way back into the game, tying it at 24 on a layup and drawn foul by Cam Salo. The play also landed Plymouth's Newberry on the bench in foul trouble.

In the fourth quarter, the Plymouth lead would be cut to as little as three, but would once again be extended to five when Nick Reisert sank his only two free throws of the game.

For Plymouth, Ringling led all scorers with 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. Colin Hay had 15 points on four-of-five shooting. Hay also had six steals and three assists. Newberry had seven points and eight boards.

Mascenic was led by Salo who had 10 points and three steals. Martel also contributed with nine points and five rebounds.

Conant 58, Lebanon 48

KEENE, N.H. (12/29/09) - On the final day of the 2009 Cheshire Tire/Ted's Shoe & Sport Holiday Basketball Tournament, Conant defeated Lebanon 58-48 for the Red Division championship in Spaulding Gymnasium at 8:30 P.M. on December 29.

In the first half of the Red Division championship game, Conant looked controlled the tempo early and went up by four on a Sean Martin steal and layup conversion. Martin would do it again, and go on a personal 7-0 run against Lebanon. Conant would lead by as many as 14 points in the first half shooting 47% from the floor (11-23), and holding Lebanon to just five field goals.

For the Orioles, Martin led all scorers with 12 points on five-of-seven shooting and four steals. Ezra Hodgson and Kemph Kim each added seven points of their own. 

The Raiders of Lebanon were led by Jacob Woodward's six points and four-of-four free throw shooting. James Kane added five points and three boards. As a team, Lebanon out rebounded Conant 19 to 12.

In the second half, Lebanon would start on a 7-0 two forced turnovers. Conant's Dan Sirios would answer with a three to start an Oriole 9-2 run of their own. Martin would end the third quarter on a buzzer beating three to extend the lead to 12, 45-33.

Conant would open the fourth on a three pointer from Sirois to make the lead 15, the largest of the game for Conant. The Orioles 78% free throw shooting and would propel them to the 10 point win.

For Conant, Martin had 20 points on seven-of-nine shooting, and stole the ball four times from the raiders. Sirois had 12 points, all three pointers. Hodgson ended up with nine points and led the team with five rebounds.

Lebanon saw 18 points from Woodward, who shot seven-of-eight from the free line. Kane shot five-of-eight from the field and scored 15 points.
