KEENE, N.H. 3/12/09 - Senior midfielder Casey
Brodersen (Derry, N.H.) had four goals to lead Keene State
to a 14-8 victory over Wheaton College in a non-conference
men's lacrosse game played Thursday afternoon in Keene.
With the scored tied two-all early in the second quarter, Keene
State tallied four consecutive goals to go up 6-2. Junior
midfielder Bryan Sweeney (East Lyme, Conn.) and
Brodersen began the flurry by scoring goals within a span of five
seconds.
The two teams traded goals and Owl goalie sophomore Alec
Corliss (Waltham, Mass.) stopped a point-blank shot by the
Lyons junior midfielder Tim Horan (Cheshire, Conn.) in the closing
seconds of the quarter to make it a 7-3 game at the break.
Wheaton cut the Owls lead to two goals twice in the third
quarter, the last time coming on an unassisted goal by
sophomore attack Chris Landers that made it 8-6.
KSC scored the last three goals of the quarter to go up 11-6.
Playing its first game of the season, Wheaton took advantage of
several man-up chances throughout the game. Consecutive goals
by senior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, Mass.) got the Lyons deficit down to
11-8.
Broadersen then went to work for the Owls, scoring low hard
goals from the left and then right side to give KSC a 13-8
lead. "I saw the opportunity when they put a short
stick defender on me and after the first one I was feeling good so
I took it to the other side and it worked out both times.
KSC Coach Mark Theriault was disappointed will
several of the nine penalties called on his team. "Going into
the final quarter one of our goals was to have good game management
with no penalties and low and behold we let them back into the
game."
Corliss, who finished with 14 saves, had his second strong
outing between the pipes for the Owls. With KSC nursing a two
goal lead (8-6) he stoned a wide open Landers sitting at his
doorstep. "I gave up a few soft goals on man-ups earlier, so
I had to step it up a little later and try to make some saves,"
Corliss said.
Senior attack Tony Santa Fe (Derry, N.H.),
junior midfielder Jamie LeSage (Exeter, N.H.), and
senior attack Rodney Arganese (Trumbull, Conn.)
finished the game with two goals each. Freshman attack
Griffin Meehan (Simsbury, Conn.) chipped in with a
goal and four assists.
Gomer had four goals and junior midfielder Drew Schaffer (New
Haven, Conn.) had three goals for Wheaton.
Lyons junior goalie Alex Lewis (Westfield, N.J.) stopped 10
shots.
The Owls (2-0) travel to Orlando, Fla., for spring break
week. They will place nationally ranked Geneseo (N.Y.) State
on Wednesday.
"We've had some up and downs this season, so we have a lot of
work to do, but we're 2-0 and I'm pretty happy about that" said
Theriault.
