Decisive fifth game win lifts Owls over Wesleyan 3-2

KEENE, N.H. 9/16/09 - The Keene State women's volleyball team edged Wesleyan (Conn.) University 3-2 in a non-conference match played Wednesday night at Spaulding Gym.

The Owls (5-5) won the first two games (25-21 and 27-25).  The Cardinals came back to win the next two game (27-25 and 25-21) to force a fifth and deciding game. Wesleyan was down 25-24 before rallying to take the third game 27-25.

Behind the serving of senior Jordan Pokryfki (Wasilla, Alaska), Keene State won the first seven points of the fifth game.  Later in the game, sophomore Braelan O'Toole (Derry, N.H.) had a solo block to give the Owls an 11-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish.  Sophomore Ellyse Davis (Londonderry, N.H.) had the final point in the 15-6 deciding game win.

"We had a letdown in the third and fourth game, but we came out with intensity in the fifth game," said sophomore Bridget O'Bryant (Merrimack, N.H.) who finished the match with a game and career high 22 kills (two off the school record held by her sister Brittany O'Bryant).

"Everyone went into the fifth game with the attitude of winning," said Pokryfki, who had 41 assists and 16 digs.  "We forgot about all the mistakes in the previous game and everyone went out of the floor with a fired up attitude."

"We showed some character," said KSC Coach Bob Weiner. "We got soft and didn't execute in the third and four games.  In the fifth game, we got a little rhythm going and put the match away."

"The Owls head into their Little East schedule with a two match winning streak."We needed to start feeling like the work we are doing is worthwhile," said Weiner.

Junior Jamie Levine (Medfield, Mass.) also had a game and season high 24 digs for the Owls.

Sophomores Casey Reed (Manhattan Beach, Ca.) and Alissa Santucci (Syosset, N.Y.) led the Wesleyan offense with 11 kills each.  Junior Ruby Hernandez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) added 23 digs and senior Ellie Healy finished with a game high 44 assists for Wesleyan (0-4).

Since losing to Trinity back on Oct. 18, 2006, KSC has won 14 consecutive regular season matches at Spaulding Gym.

Keene State hosts a LEC tri-match with UMass-Dartmouth and Western Conn., on Saturday.
